Chie demands her class' attention. She stands outside the school with her arms at akimbo as she sternly warns them that if they do not take cooking seriously, someone will get hurt. The scene pans over trays of vegetables and cooking utensils as Chie continues to demand that the students take this part of their class seriously. It pans back to reveal that she stands before long tables where students stand in front of said trays and utensiles. These include Satoko, Rika, Glasses-chan, Keiichi, Mion, Rena, and Twin-Tails-chan.
Headband-chan happily holds a carrot while another boy slices a potato whilst watched intently by another boy. The scene passes over Rena, then Mion, who is checking the edge of a knife, then to Keiichi who marvels at how passionate Chie is about curry. Mion flatly explains that Chie puts her whole life and soul into curry. She then turns to him with a comically concerned look as she laments that Chie will grade them harshly. Unimpressed, Keiichi dismisses this by noting that it is just cooking, and they can "half-ass" it and still get full points. Concerned, Rena crouches between then and warns Keiichi not to speak so loud: "If she hears you. . . ."
Keiichi scolds her for being so dramatic since, besides, "curry is basically junk food ." He continues to lecture that all curry tastes the same and anyone would become sick with it, only to be interupted by a spatula and ladle slamming into the ground between his feet. With fear, he slowly turns to the direction from which they came, and he, Rena, and Mion face Chie who is smiling pleasantly.
There is a Psychoesque music beat as the scene focuses on her serene, smiling face. She emits a quiet giggle.
Keiichi stares back cowed. He then, "eagerly," encourages the rest to get serious. Mion takes the opportunity to declare that this is all part of the day's Club activity: a curry showdown! Satoko eagerly agrees and announced Rika as a partner. Holding her knife, Rika declares that her curry will drive them crazy. This concerns Keiichi since Rika is a good cook as well, and he protests that Satoko is being unfair. Rena happily reminds him that she is also good at making curry, so he better be prepared to lose. He concludes that he is surrounded by good opponents save one. He dramatically turns to see Mion skillfully parring a potato. As he grouses his disbelief, Mion mocks him saying, "I bet Mion's a horrible cook!" She laughs as she notes that he thought he could beat her. She slams down the potato which then breaks up into cubes. Desperate, Keiichi grabs some camping canisters and vows he will show them what his father taught him when camping.
With concern, Satoko stares at the boiling canisters behind Keiichi as he stirs his pot. She asks if he should remove the lid; Keiichi assumes she is trying to trick him. He pontificates how one leaves the lid on as the rice bubbles and boils, to which Satoko watches with silent concern. She then responds that he left her with no other option. What follows is a montage of Satoko destroying her rivals' curry. At the end, Rika consoles the dejected Keiichi, and Satoko repeats the consolation. Keiichi screams an epithet at Satoko as the scene pans up to the sky.
Haggard, Keiichi walks home with Mion and Rena. Mion happily encourages him that he at least pulled through. Keiichi retorts that her words will not make him feel better, and if she wants to make him feel better, she should give him something to eat. Rena laughs and su theggests that his dinner will taste that much better. At the water wheel, Mion bids her goodbye as she explains she has to go to work.
The scene shifts to a view of the Sonozaki home, then inside to focus on the doll. Mion walks up to it and gives the traditional "I'm home" greeting. She sits in front of the adjacent mirror, smiles, and removes the tie on her ponytail. The scene then shifts to her dressed as Shion standing at Keiichi's door while holding a box. She blushes. She gathers her courage and rings the doorbell. Inside, Keiichi lies in extremis on the floor in front of the door. He responds that it is open. Mion gathers her courage again and opens the door. She stammers a "good evening." The scene shifts to the outside. As Mion expresses shock at seeing Keiichi collapsed on the floor, Satoko watches from outside the gate. Her eyes blaze.
The block calendar reads, "Wednesday, June 15, 1983."
With a view of the outside of the school, Keiichi is heard thanking Mion for the food. The scene quickly shifts to him returning the wrapped box as she has a conniption fit. She recovers blushing deeply. Rika. Satoko, and Rena, as well as a few of the other kids, look at her blushing with surprise. Ever able to read a room, Keiichi jauntily claims that Shion came by the previous evening to give him food. He explains that he washed the boxes. Mion takes the opportunity to laugh and stammer that Shion is "so thoughtful."
Satoko watches. She then suggests that Mion is in an especially good mood today. Blushing Mion reacts with a start, and Rena helpfully adds that Mion is being so kind and gentle. Mion reacts with further embarrassment; Satoko appears disappointed by her reaction.

In the evening, Mion cleans the outside of the windows of her uncle's store. She happens to wipe the window in front of a displayed doll that is the same as the one Keiichi gave her. She pauses, smiles, and blushes. She gathers her bucket and walks into the store just as Keiichi and Shion approach from the street. Shion rushes up to the window and bubbles in excitement. She declares the dolls displayed "cute!" and Keiichi notes that he recognizes the store. Feigning vulnerability, Shion asks what Keiichi if he will buy one for her. Keiichi reluctantly complies and calls to the store worker who turns out to be, of course, Mion. They experience a recapitulation of the scene of shock and surprise from the Question Arc episode; however, at the end, Mion watches with blushing surprise as Keiichi and Shion starts to leave. Shion genially suggests that they continue their "date" and should not disturb Mion, who is "busy" at work, further.
For his part, Keiichi does look back at Mion with a look of concern; Mion continues to stare back. Shion again takes Keiichi away. There is a view of the street light, then of the empty space in the window where the doll Keiichi purchased for Shion sat.
Out loud, Mion asks "Kei-chan," then she looks down and grabs at her neck. She looks up with anger in her eyes as she continues her question: "why?!"
Tears stream from her eyes.
The paper calendar reads, at night, "Sunday, June 19, 1983."
Villagers have gathered at the Furude Shrine for the Watanagashi Festival. Rena quickly enters Cute Mode as she looks at the stalls. She runs off, and Keiichi, who was behind her, looks back with concern at Mion. She similarly looks back at him and asks him what is wrong. Keiichi shakes it off, and Mion then walks past him declaring that they have to find Rika and Satoko should be with her. Keiichi, still concerned, agrees.
A black luxury car makes its way down the main road. Inside, Shion haughtily instructs her driver to just drop her off. She then turns to him and demands that Kasai not try to stay with her for her protection. He responds that he understands, but he reminds her to be careful. When Shion asks him why she should, he explains that Hinamizawa can be dangerous at this time of year. Shion laughs and playfully asks what the "Shotgun Dragon" could be afraid of. He responds that the village has a history. Shion pleasantly insists that there is no reason for her to be "demoned away" if they really do do that.
Kasai remains silent as the car turns on the road. He then asks Shion, who looks forward pensively, how she intends to return that night. She admits that she does not know and suspects that, perhaps, she can ask her sister if she can stay at the family mansion. As credulous as he can appear, Kasai questions her suggestion on this night of all nights. In response, Shion yawns and declares that she is going to sleep, and he should wake her up when she arrives. Kasai notes that they will arrive soon, but there is a blanket in the back seat. Shion reacts with comic irritation and tells Kasai to be silent since she is sleeping. The car continues its way down the road.
The torches surrounding a platform at the festival are burniing. Villagers have gathered around it. In the midst, Mion, standing with Satoko and Rena, asks where Keiichi is. Satoko slyly suggests that Shion dragged him away. Mion reacts to this with surprise and blushing, but she tries to recover with a laugh that he will miss Rika's performance. Satoko responds that she is sure he is someplace where he will have a good view of it.
The drum is struck.
Satoko continues her needling of Mion by suggesting that Keiichi and Shion are having a "wonderful time." Mion's eyes narrow. She reaches up to her neck.
The lock to the Saiguden breaks open. Jirō announces his success to Takano, who stands behind him. Takano turns towards the viewer and announces that they are now all partners in crime. She asks if they wish to join them in seeing what is inside. Mion looks interested, but Keiichi is frightened. He stammers that they do not want to be part of their "crime," but takes his arm in her own special signature way, and interrupts that it sounds interesting. She turns to him and, with a blush and "puppy dog eyes," encourages him to go in.
The scene cuts to the flute player opening the ceremonies. Rika begins her dance. Rena watches transfixed with a smile, Satoko watches with a blank expression, but Mion does not watch. Her eyes are obscured by her bangs and her hands are clasped on each side of her neck.
Her fingers dig into her neck.
Rika's hoe strikes the bedding.
