This is a list of episodes of the animated Japanese murder mystery series Higurashi no Na ku Koro ni. Note that none of the English translations, despite the sound novels featuring the text "When They C ry", are official titles.
As should be obvious, in this list major spoilers there be, arg!
Not yet aired episodes have humorous "placeholders" which will be replaced after airing. . . or after we get to completing it.
In 2006, the first season, entitled Higurashi no Na ku Koro ni, was produced by the Japanese animation studio Studio Deen and directed by Chiaki Kon. It was released in English by Geneon and later Funimation, under the title When They C ry - Higurashi no Na ku Koro ni. The series contained twenty-six episodes, which aired between April 4 and September 26, on a number of Japanese television networks, including but not limited to, Chiba TV, Kansai TV, and Tokai TV. The series is divided into six chapters, which are the first six chapters in the original visual novel series. First is Onikakushi-hen between episodes one and four, followed by Watanagashi-hen between episodes five and eight, and Tatarigoroshi-hen between episodes nine and thirteen, making the series half over. Next is Himatsubushi-hen between episodes fourteen and fifteen, making it the smallest of the story arcs. The last two chapters are Meakashi-hen, between episodes sixteen and twenty-one, and finally Tsumihoroboshi-hen, between episodes twenty-two and twenty-six.
In 2007, the second anime season, entitled Higurashi no Na ku Koro ni Kai, was produced by the same team as with the first season, containing twenty-four episodes. The series aired in Japan between July 6 and December 17 on several Japanese television networks, such as Sun TV, TV Kanagawa, and TV Saitama. The story is similar to the first season, but what was left unexplained in the first season is explained over the course of three separate story arcs. The first is an anime-original arc called Yakusamashi-hen, which is followed by the last two arcs from the original visual novel series: Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen. On September 18, 2007, a sixteen-year-old girl killed her father with an axe in Kyoto, Japan. The remote similarities between Kai and the incident were too strong. In response, Tokai TV replaced episode twelve on September 21, 2007 with a cooking show.
Also in 2007, after the second seson was aired, the first Higurashi OVA named Higurashi no Na ku Koro ni Gaiden was released. The OVA contains a one episode extra arc named Nekogoroshi-hen. Nekogoroshi-hen was a light novel released in 2006, but when Studio Deen saw Higurashi's growing popularity, released a 23 minute long OVA.
In 2009, the second Higurashi OVA, entitled Higurashi no Na ku Koro ni Rei was released. It consists of three arcs, taken from the epilogue disc of the same name and a light novel released with the PS2 game. These three arcs are Hajisarashi-hen, Saikoroshi-hen and Hirukowashi-hen. Hirukowashi-hen is a story based on the PC and PSP game Higurashi Daybreak''. Hajisarashi-hen was originally found in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Matsuri's Soundtrack'', and was adapted to this OVA.
In 2011, the third Higurashi OVA, named Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira was released. The OVA contains four arcs. However, these arcs are mostly fanservice celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Higurashi franchise. The four arcs are Batsukoishi-hen, Ayakashisenshi-hen, Musubienishi-hen and Yumeutsushi-hen. Batsukoishi-hen was originally released on Higurashi no Na ku Koro ni Rei fan-disc that was supposed to be Meakashi-hen's epilogue, but was dropped for being too silly and irrelevant, while the rest has original stories.
In 2012, the very first animated Higurashi movie, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku was announced. According to Ryukishi07, the movie will be based on Higurashi Outbreak. Outbreak is a short story which it's script is included in the CD jacket of Higurashi Daybreak's Original Soundtrack. On the 11th of June, new information was revealed about Kaku. Unlike the original concept, Kaku will be a Pachinko-OVA for the new Pachinko machine called "Higurashi no Na ku Koro ni Itadaki" and not a movie. The OVA will be released on DVD with the Pachinko machine at the end of July. The pilot aired on 15th August, 2013 and it is currently unknown if more episodes will air in the future. After the release of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hō, which has the Outbreak arc included, the OVA makers revealed, in an interview, that the Kaku ending would differ from the original ending.
When They C ry Wiki will leave the following original description as a testament to how fans were fooled by the releases and first episode:"In January, 2020, a new anime project was announced titled Higurashi no Na ku Koro ni just like the original series. On March 21, 2020, the first trailer was released. The new anime will be a complete remake of the original series, made by Studio Passione with the help of Ryukishi07, featuring new scenes, new character designs by Akio Watanabe, but retaining the original voice actors." In reality, the first and subsequent episodes of the first arc Onidamashi-hen demonstrate that this is a new series with a new set of arcs.
The new season was expected to be aired in July, 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced its delay. On August 21, it was announced that the anime's new premiere will be October 1, 2020 and will consist of 24 episodes. The new anime airs every Thursday on TOKYO MX, BS11 and SunTV channels (except for December 11, 18 and 25, 2020 airing on Friday). On the 7th of October, information was leaked from Amazon's video service that the new anime's title is "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gō" (ひぐらしの な く頃に業), featuring Onidamashi-hen as it's first arc, implying that the new series are not simply a remake, but a new set of arcs. As noted, subsequent arcs bore this out.

| During the annual Watanagashi festival, Keiichi is informed by Tomitake and a mysterious woman, Takano, about "Oyashiro's curse," a series of murders and disappearances that have occurred on the night of the festival for the past four years, all supposedly caused by the curse of Hinamizawa's guardian deity, Oyashiro. The next day, Keiichi is interrogated by a police detective, Ōishi, and learns that Tomitake had committed suicide by clawing out his own throat, while Takano has gone missing, apparently as part of the curse. Upon becoming Ōishi's informant, Keiichi notices a change in Rena and Mion's behavior, suspecting them of hiding something from him, though he too is accused of keeping secrets for his ties with Ōishi, which he denies. Keiichi delves deeper into the history of the curse during a phone call with Ōishi, learning that one of the victims is Satoshi, a boy who had apparently transferred out of school in Hinamizawa before Keiichi arrived. At that point, Keiichi realizes that Rena has been eavesdropping on him the whole time. | ||||

| Growing increasingly paranoid, Keiichi calls in sick for school to avoid his friends and delve deeper into the mysteries of Hinamizawa. Ōishi asks Keiichi out to lunch, telling him that all of the victims of Oyashiro's curse are related to his friends, with Satoshi being Satoko's brother; Rena has also been known to have acted violently on one occasion. That night, Rena and Mion visit Keiichi visit him and give him a box of ohagi as part of a club activity. They also interrogate him about where he went to eat, and menacingly ask what he talked to "the old man" about. One of the ohagi contains a needle, convincing Keiichi that Rena and Mion are trying to kill him. Returning to school the next day, Keiichi arms himself with Satoshi's baseball bat, which concerns his friends, who reveal that Satoshi had displayed similar paranoid behavior before he disappeared. | ||||

| Rena pays Keiichi a visit and begins acting strangely once again, prompting Keiichi to succumb to his paranoia and slam the door on her fingers. Distressed by Keiichi's behavior, Mion attempts to apologize for keeping so many secrets about Hinamizawa from him, but he coldly rebuffs her, saying she is no friend of his. Later, Keiichi finds himself being followed by Rena and demands to know who caused all the murders and disappearances; Rena simply replies that it is all the work of Oyashiro. Escaping from Rena, Keiichi finds himself being chased by a mysterious group of men, who knock him out. When he awakens, he is subdued by Rena and Mion, who attempt to inject him with a syringe. In self-defense, Keiichi beats Rena and Mion to death with Satoshi's bat and flees. He calls Ōishi from a phonebooth and tells him the murders were caused by Oyashiro that the murderer is not human as he previously thought. At that point Keiichi, who was sure that Oyashiro was behind him, clawed out his own throat. The next day, Keiichi is found dead and the police also find the bodies of Mion and Rena, and they find out that Keiichi was the one who killed them. Keiichi's suspicions turned out to be nothing more than paranoid delusions. What had truly triggered his paranoia, however, remains a mystery. | ||||

Upon being confronted, Mion admits freely that their suspicions are correct, re-introduces her self as Mion Sonozaki, and simply asks for half an hour alone with Keiichi before she is arrested, and she tells him that she will reveal all of her crimes to him. She takes him to the underground caverns of the Sonozaki estate where Shion is being held in one of the prison cells. As Keiichi tries to comfort a distraught Shion, Mion knocks him out with a rock from behind. Mion says that the demon inside her has taken over, but Keiichi states that the Mion in his heart will never change. He says that if she must torture him, at least let Shion go, and implores Mion to fight her inner demon. She remarks that both requests are impossible, but she decides to let Keiichi go. Later Keiichi sees Mion outside and upon reuniting she stabs him. In the hospital, Detective Ōishi reveals that Mion was among the dead bodies that they found in the well (Hinting that the whole time Shion was the real Mion, and Mion was the real Shion.) Shion (Mion) appears in Keiichi's hospital room after Ōishi leaves and presumably kills Keiichi. | ||||

At the Furude Shrine, Keiichi discovers Rika's disemboweled body, and Satoko believes that Keiichi is the culprit and flees, eventually coming to the conclusion that he is possessed by Oyashiro. After Keiichi fruitlessly tries to convince her otherwise, Satoko forces him off a bridge. Shortly afterward, disaster strikes the village of Hinamizawa, a gas leak killing thousands of residents, though Keiichi survives both his fall becomes the sole survivor of the disaster. | ||||

Afterward, she brutally murders Satoko, who she has been holding captive, only to remember to her horror that Satoshi's last request to her was to keep Satoko safe, thus driving her deeper into madness. When discovered by Rena and Keiichi, Shion lures Keiichi to the dungeon and attempts to torture him, but she hesitates and decides to let him go. After he is knocked out by using her stunner, she switches clothes with Mion and pushes her down the well, but only after Mion tells her that their grandmother may have approved of Satoshi. After being rescued along with Keiichi (because they are unaware she is the culprit), Shion starts to hallucinate. She visits Keiichi and gravely wounds him. Shion hastily returns to her apartment by scaling the side of the building, only to slip and fall to her death. This, however, makes the ending of Watanagashi-hen ambiguous, since an image of Mion appeared to Keiichi while he was in the hospital, though both Mion and Shion are dead by that point, meaning that ending is a hallucination. However, Keiichi dies a few days later of acute heart failure, possibly caused by the hallucination of Shion attacking him. | ||||

Keiichi tries to dissuade Rena, but is confronted by her with his own dark secrets. After confessing his past sin to his friends, he finds that he can recall events from Onikakushi-hen, particularly his own paranoia and murder of Rena and Mion, even though they have no bearing on the current situation. This, however, strengthens his understanding of Rena's situation and his resolve to prevent such tragedies from occurring again, even going as far as apologizing to the clueless Mion for killing her. | ||||

Working together with the police and his friends, Keiichi manages to defuse the bomb. On the roof, Keiichi and Rena have a final confrontation, Keiichi armed with Satoshi's bat and Rena with her nata. During their duel, Rena gradually regains her sanity until she defeats Keiichi, though she is unable to bring herself to kill him. Realizing the error of her ways, Rena reconciles with her friends. Though tragedy has been averted through Rena's atonement, the constant time loops have yet to lift; however, there is now hope for the future. |

Satoko stumbles back into Hinamizawa in the aftermath of the Great Hinamizawa Disaster, the trauma of witnessing the remaining villagers' deaths driving Satoko into mental shock. Not wanting Keiichi to become a narcissistic jerk, the girls try to talk him out of taking the trunks off, though Keiichi thinks it's a trick so they can force him to wear an embarrassing pair of trunks they provided. Knowing Keiichi won't go down without a fight, the girls rally everyone at the pool to chase him down and retrieve the trunks by force, even going as far as turning Keiichi's only supporters (Tomitake, Ōishi, and Irie) against each other and fight over wearing the trunks for themselves. Everyone reasons that Rena must have swallowed the red magatama and sets out to stop her and find the white magatama, though it winds up in the possession of Tomitake, then Takano, and finally Ōishi, each of whom gradually come to accept her love under the magatama's curse and refuse to relinquish it. Keiichi finally manages to obtain the magatama after beating Rena and Ōishi with Akasaka in a game of mahjong; unfortunately, Ōishi fumbles it and Keiichi ends up accidentally swallowing it as well. Fortunately, Rika lifts the curse before Keiichi can fall under its power, which returns Rena to normal. In the process, Rena, who is grateful to Keiichi for helping her, expresses her feelings toward him, though she isn't sure if it's part of the magatama's power. Unfortunately for Rena, Tomitake and Takano still appear to be infatuated with Rena and fight over who gets to keep her. |

| Hinamizawa and other neighboring cities are put under quarantine because of the discovery of a new virus. Keiichi, Rena and Mion discuss about it, and Mion tells them that she heard in a particular line that the first victim was most likely from Takatsudo, but they hadn't left the area in really long, so there should be other original victim. She also says that the virus was likely to be endemic, and that'd resemble Oyashiro-sama's legend. They also learn that Rika was taken by the JSDF for being diagnosed with an unknown condition, though they had left Satoko. Mion mentions the rumours of Maebara and Ryūgū families would be involved in this virus. Hinamizawa is basically abandoned and all signal is cut off, so Mion sends a mail to Keiichi and tries to send it to Rena too, but she gets shot. Rena carries Mion to Maebara Residence and asks them to flee from Hinamizawa. Rena and Keiichi find that Satoko was kidnapped and was going to be the sacrifice for Oyashiro-sama’s ritual, so they go after her, while Mr. and Mrs. Maebara escape from the village with Mion. The scene changes to Nomura and Takano Hifumi representing Alphabet Project and some ministers, where it's revealed that the η-173 (said virus) had been studied by UN, but the research was trashed, it was found that it was a parasitic class-C virus. They use it as a bio-weapon and pressurize the Prime Minister to approve the quarantine. The scene changes to Irie Clinic, where Rika is and Irie talks with a quarantine group. Later, Irie notices their efforts are useless against the virus and suicides. The scene changes to Keiichi and Rena, and are able to rescue Satoko by fooling the paranoid villagers. Rena and Keiichi want to flee from Hinamizawa, but Satoko asks them to first go back to her house so she can get her shoes. The scene changes to Hanyū and Rika conversation. Hanyū says that her siblings are euphoric to be finally free, and that she hopes they’ll calm down soon enough. Keiichi, Rena and Satoko find Rika and try to convince her to run away with them, but she insists on staying in Hinamizawa. The episode ends with the Maebara family, Mion, Rena and Satoko in a neighbour city, having used the tunnels in Sonozaki House to leave Hinamizawa. He eventually receives a call from his mother explaining that she and her father had to travel to Tōkyō for work, but Rena is coming with dinner. Keiichi initially tries to prevent Rena from entering, but he recalls what he learned from Rika and lets her in. However, it is revealed that her large wrapped box contains tools to dispose of a body. When he confronts her, she explains as she deeply scratches her neck, that she intends to save her father by having her and Keiichi satisfy Oyashiro-sama's curse. In their fight, she repeatedly stabs him with a knife while he strikes her in the head with a clock radio. He awakens in the hospital two days later. Only Mion will tell him that he actually killed Rena. She then reveals that both Rika and Satoko were found dead from knife wounds to their necks. A nurse comes to check on him after Mion leaves. Later, when Keiichi encounters Rika, Mion, Rena, and Satoko, he lies that he saw her dance, but when he claims she did not make a mistake, Rika becomes sullen, and the rest try to console her that no one noticed her mistake. Mion takes him to go cotton drifting and asks him if he saw her sister. He stammers denial. She then presses him if she saw either Takano or Jirō; he again lies Ōishi stops him on his way home and reveals that Mion is a daughter of a yakuza boss. Ōishi genially informs him that he knows he, Takano, Jirō, and Shion were together. In his room that night, Keichi receives a call from Shion who asks him to confirm the details of their night. When he asks her why, she reveals that Takano and Jirō have gone missing. When Keiichi wonders if this could be connected to Oyashiro-sama's Curse, she replies that it could to his considerable discomfort. The following day, he discovers that the mayor has also gone missing. Keiichi confesses his upset to Rika with a story about cats, but Rika's eyes blaze, and in her Adult Voice she mocks him for condemning their world. | ||||||

| Keiich i enters the school to learn that Rika is also missing. In the class, Satoko darkly stares at him and notes that he was talking to her. When he climbs the ladder, Mion starts to shake it as she declares that she has to put an end to this and Rika is the head of one of the three great families. She later calls him to come to her home. There, she takes him into the Sonozaki bunker and explains that the Watanagashi has become a way for the families to eliminate people. She leads him into a cell, locks it, then declares that she loves him and will protect him as figures approach the compound. Rescued by Ōishi, on June 6th, the two meet, and the detective explains what they found. Oryō, Kimiyoshi, and Shion were found at the bottom of a well in the compound, while Mion and Satoko's bodies were found in a mansion hallway. They notice the absence of both Rika and Satoko. This appears to disturb Mion, who must be reminded to lead the greeting. Rika enters and informed their teacher that Satoko will be late. During physical education, Ōishi introduces himself to Keiichi and makes inquires concerning Satoko. When Keiichi does not satisfy him with his answer.png.pngs, Ōishi warns him about making enemies as he grabs his shoulder hard. Irie arrives and intervenes. When Ōishi suggests that he may wish to talk to Irie, Irie reminds him to obtain a warrant. As Irie treats Keiichi's shoulder, he explains the history of The Series of Mysterious Deaths and how Ōishi persists in investigating what were all deaths by accidents or a criminal. Later during lunch, Rika remains unconsolably depressed by the absence of her friend. Satoko does appear, and she tries to dismiss her absence as simply running errands. When Mion offers Satoko to suggest the game for the Club activity, Satoko politely declines. Keiichi asks the rest to explain what is happening. Rika explains that Satoko left to live with her uncle, and the rest explain her situation along with he reticence of the Chid Welfare Service to act. | The next day, Chie asks to speak to Rika about Satoko. The rest eventually enter her office to encourage her to act. Naturally, when she visits Satoko's home, Teppei dismisses her. Back in school, Keiichi rages against the disinterest of the Child Welfare Service, and Rika reveals to him that Satoko once lied about abuse against her stepfather. Satoko returns in time for lunch and attempts to dismiss their concerns. They briefly return to their usual roles with her and Keiichi fighting for food; however, when he tries to pat her on her head, she screams, grabs her head, vomits, then runs away into a cornier screaming that she is sorry and begging for her brother to make it stop. | |||||

| Satoko continues screaming in the classroom begging her "Ni-Ni" to save her. Keiichi remains shocked by this and tries to intervene, but Rena asks him to back off as she comforts the sobbing Satoko while apologizing to her for their failure to help her. Their teacher enters, sees the situation, and demands to know what happened. Satoko suddenly rises and tries to laugh it off that it was all a tussle she had with Rena over their lunch. After school and after Satoko insists on returning to her home she now shares with her uncle, the rest explain the situation to Keiichi. Shion arrives and angrily demands to know why no one has done anything. She resolves to kill Teppei herself. However, Keiichi stops her, warning that if she were to go through with her plans, the world she wants to return to will go away. Shion violently opposes him with a chair, but Keiichi will not move. Finally, Rika comes in between them which causes Shion to back down. In her Adolescent Voice, Rika encourages them that this is not yet a "dead end" world, and, together, they can create a "miracle." Keiichi encourages them to go directly to the Child Welfare Office. They do, they wait, and they eventually meets with a worker affectionately deemed the Officious Glasses-chan. She buries them in polite evasion. As they walk home dejected, Keiichi despairs that he can do no more. In her Adult Voice, Rika scolds him. Inspired by this, the next day Keiichi rallies the entire classroom. Outside, Rika stops and shocks Chie who feels she must intervene. Chie relents when she receives the promise that nothing violent is planned. | This time, the Center Manager Harayama meets with them and similarly buries them with evasion and platitudes. Outside, Shion remarks that this reminds her of the Dam Construction War. Her sister quotes the saying that if one of their people is attacked two respond, if two, then four, et cetera. This, along with students claiming they can attest to the abuse Satoko suffers, inspires Keiichi to try again the next day with even more people. | Walking along a road, Ōishi smiles. | ||||

| Two old men complain about damage Teppei did to the Furude Shrine offering box and statue. They predict that Oyashiro-sama's curse will befall the Hōjō this year. Outside the Child Welfare Services Center, Keiichi has gathered a sizable crowd of many characters. Keiichi and the Gang gain entrance and have another meeting that blows them off. As they leave dejected, Mion invites Keiichi to the Watanagashi Festival planning meeting. There, Keiichi confronts Hinamizawa's mayor and the rest of the village council. During the argument, Ōishi enters, sits, and watches. Keiichi very formally asks for their help, and it becomes clear that they feel blocked by Sonozaki Oryō. Keiichi and the Gang move then to the Sonozaki Home where he is addressed by Sonozaki Akane, who rather curtly wonders what the problem is. A heated argument follows leading to Oryō to at one point demand someone kill Keiichi and dump him in the well. However, Keiichi also formally asks Oryō to relent. Finally, Akane severely suggests to Keiichi that he has said enough and it is now time for him to behave like an adult and back off. | Outside, Akane and Kimiyoshi join them looking rather pleased. It appears despite her reaction, Oryō is impressed with Keiichi. Akane encourages her daughters to step up their game around Keiichi. Rika asks Keiichi if they really can save Satoko from her fate; Keiichi insists that they can, and she should stop using that word. In her Adolescent Voice, Rika vows to him that she will not, then adds that he taught her that destroying fate is as easy as tearing through wet paper. When a startled Keiichi asks her when that happened, in her Child Voice she teases him that it is a secret. | |||||

| Keiichi and the rest of the Gang are initially upset when Kimiyoshi informs them at school that he has learned that their proposal has been rejected. Nevertheless, he vows to rally the rest of the village council and to seek Oryō's advice. When all congregate at the Child Welfare Services Center, the crowd is huge and comprised most other characters. Ōishi shows up to inform them that they are conducting an illegal demonstration. If they simply move off of the Center's grounds, they will then have to obtain a permit. As Shion rages, he gets a call from his chief and leaves to answer.png.png. He waits with Kumagai having cigarettes until they see a black limousine approach, and Sonozaki Saburō emerge. Meanwhile, the mayor of Okinomiya meets with Oryō and Akane and calls Harayama's boss directly to politely instruct him to comply with the demands of the crowd. Center social workers go to Satoko's home with Ōishi and the police. After Teppei's arrest, the Gang meet with Shion to attend the Watanagashi Festival. At the beginning of Rika's dance, Satoko takes Keiichi aside to thank him and ask if she can address him as "Ni-Ni." She then insists that she briefly give him something and conveys him to her home. Inside, she leaves to obtain it, leaving Keiichi alone. Teppei appears and attacks him with a bat. Keiichi eventually wrestles it away, and he kills Teppei before passing out. | After a few months it is the beginning of fall. Keiichi is still in the hospital recovering from his head injury. He has headaches and cannot remember the night. He meets with Rena outside and asks her why Mion and others have not visited him. | The episode opens with a depiction of the events that happened at the Watanagashi Festival described in the previous episode. The Hinamizawa Syndrome-ravaged Ōishi accuses her of being the source of The Series of Mysterious Deaths before bludgeoning her to death. She awakes screaming in the plane of time fragments with Hanyū. Hanyū, whose image appears to break up and repeat like a recording, explains that Rika appears to be one who lives her life in "loops." When Rika despairs at such an existence, Hanyū reveals that she has left her a sword that can completely kill such in the statue of Oyashiro-sama before bidding her final farewell. Rika awakens in her bed screaming with Satoko gently scolding her not to sleep in and help her make breakfast. She explains to Satoko that she had a bad dream. Satoko receives a phone call summoning all members of The Club. When they meet, Rika's depression is obvious, and Mion offers to cheer her up by allowing her to choose the game. Rika choses hide-and-seek where the rest try to find her before nightfall. She goes to the Saiguden where she searches for the sword. Meanwhile, the rest try and fail to find her. As day becomes night, they decided to continue to search for her even though they lost since she is their friend. | To her initial hysterical disappointment, Rika does not find the sword in the statue of Oyashiro-sama as promised. She does find a shard which she decides she can use to cut her throat. Before she does, she hears her friends calling to her from outside. Rika holds up her hand, spreads her fingers, and decides to try five more lives. | |||||

| Keiichi reacts stunned during a meeting of The Club when Mion proposes him as host of the Watanagashi Festival's auction. Convinced by the flattery of the rest, Keiichi accompanies them to the Da Vinci game store run by Mion's uncle Yoshiro. She promptly cajoles him into donating to the auction. They notice a mahjong game, and Yoshiro explains that someone set it up to demonstrate a complex trick. Satoko tries to perform it, but she fails. Ōishi arrives and is revealed to be the person Yoshiro mentioned. With him comes, to Rika's delight, Akasaka Mamoru, who returned as he promised to help her. He even agrees to risk upsetting his wife by staying in Hinamizawa through the Watanagashi Festival rather than stay with her at a spring. This, of course, means Rika has her final piece in place, and . .. | . . . the scene cuts to her home where Akasaka has stabbed her repeatedly while scratching out his neck! He pours gasoline everywhere and sets fire to the home. Before she dies, Rika looks up at her bloody hand, curls down her index finger and snaps . .. | . . . only to find herself wounded with Akane dispatching members of her own family to destroy the "demon blood." | On Sunday, June 12, 1983, Rika wakes up to find Satoko looking down at her. Satoko explains that Rika has had bad dreams and a fever, and she promises to stay with her. To Rika's horror, she discovers that Satoko is performing the Watanagashi upon her. Satoko explains that Oyashiro-sama has made her his new miko and cursed Rika for attempting to leave Hinamizawa. After a finger snap, Rika has a conversation with herself as a young teen and child regarding her status in Hinamizawa. While it is her cage which she wished to leave, it also contains her friends. After a series of flashbacks of both fun and death, Rika declares that she loves Hinamizawa. Rika experiences a happy sequence of events, which include Keiichi and Rena never consumed by paranoia, and Teppei never returning, that culminates in the Watanagashi Festival. She sees Jirō skulking away after her dance. She follows then stops him stating that she wishes to talk to him. Rika is tired, and Satoko remarks on the fact that she has been spending late nights doing something. Rika refuses to reveal what it is since she is scared that Satoko will laugh at her. | At school, Keiichi is now the class representative. Mion attends high school in Okinomiya, and the rest have lost touch with her. Keiichi and Rena run The Club which now includes more students but forbids traps and cheating. Satoko finds this frustrating. Rika leaves early with the excuse that she has to practice her dance. Satoko follows her and suspects that Rika just finds the games boring, and Rika allows her to believe that. Both note the changes in the village, with Satoko admitting that she is a bit sad to see some of the changes. | At the Irie Clinic, Irie reveals that Satoko is cured of the Hinamizawa Syndrome; a surprising result confirmed by repeat testing. Irie reports similar improvements in other villages that started a year ago. Rika meets with the other two heads of the Great Families to ask a favor. It is unseen, but Kimiyoshi quickly agrees, but Ōryo remains stubborn, implying that they may do what they will but she will not change. Nevertheless, at the end of her dance, both appear with her on stage and Ōryo does agree that the Dam War is over and all of the scars must heal. Satoko blushes at this. | Walking home from school Rika ask Satoko if she will go shopping with her in Okinomiya. In school, Rika explains to Keiichi, Rena, and Mion that Irie will pay for her and Satoko to attend. They agree to help them study. Later, that night Satoko discovers Rika studying at 2 A.M. Satoko gently scolds her for doing so without her. A Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy Montage follows with the two singing as they study over the ensuing years. | The calendar reads "Monday, March 1, 1987": the day of the results of the entrance exam. Rika quickly finds that her exam number listed; Satoko requires a dramatic moment of uncertainty before she finds her number. | The young teenaged Rika and Satoko enter the academy. Rika is enthralled by the Academy, particularly the formalities; Satoko finds it stuffy, false, and boring. | In June 1987, Rika enters the main hall at St. Lucia's followed by friends and admired by all. Satoko confronts Rika and asks her to dispense with her façade. Rika demands that she be silent and learn to act properly. After Satoko walks away, Rika does defend her as having saved her life hundreds of times. Very late that night, Satoko stops her sole studying and returns to the main hall. As if talking to Rika, she admits she understands why a girl who grew up in the countryside became entranced by all of the sophisticated trappings. She rationalizes that if Rika is reminded of the fun they had in Hinamizawa, she will return to the rika she knows. | The next morning, in the hall, Satoko snaps her fingers and the chandelier releases cooking pots on Rika and her trio of admirers, but one of them becomes injured to Satoko's shock and regret. The Teacher confronts her with the fact that one of the girls informed her of Satoko's history with traps, and there is security footage. She locks her in a detention room and advises her to reflect on her actions and study so she may return to class sooner. Crying with a flashback to Rika asking her join her dream, Satoko wails why she did not respond, "no." She begs to go back to the that time. | After her release, Satoko is informed that she will be moved to the Special Class. The Teacher encourages her to work to regain her place in the Regular Class. Satoko returns to her room to find a formal letter from Mion that invites her to return to Hinamizawa for a day with The Club. | Rika and Satoko are picked up by the now college-aged Mion. She attends the same university as Keiichi and Rena. | The members meet and play numerous games. Keiichi wins numerous games forcing the girls to suffer various penalties until, ultimately, he loses and must submit to all of the penalties. At the end, Mion invites them to have dinner at Angel Mort where her sister is. Satoko asks if she can walk a bit on her own. Mion tells her when she is done she will come and pick her up. As she walks, she learns that things are changing: they are tearing down the school, and the home she shared with Rika collapsed. She turns to the Saiguden whose doors are cracked open, and she smiles as she wonders if Oyashiro-sama has forgiven her. She hears a ringing and the air between her and the doors pulse. When she enters she sees the statue is different. When she touches the statue to see if the sound is coming from it, it starts to crack. A horn falls, and when Satoko touches it, it emits a bright light that engulfs her. She finds herself in the Realm of Time Fragments where a woman stands in front of her. The woman smiles as she observes that it has been a long time since they men, "child of man." | ||

| The woman repeats her greeting to the confused Satoko and calls her by various names. Satoko does not understand, and the woman does not explain. The woman finally suggests that Satoko will achieve her dream by looping through time, though it will take a very long time. While credulous, Satoko demands that she grant her that ability. The woman explains that all Satoko has to do to enter a new loop is to die. Over Satoko's shock the woman explains that, unlike "the cat 's ability," Satoko will retain her memories. Over Satoko's protests, the woman adds that there will be a price, but if Satoko's efforts are sufficiently entertaining, that will be enough. Satoko tries to flee, but she is engulfed in the light of a fragment . .. | . . . and awakes in 1983. She stares at her reflection in the mirror, recalls Rika's behavior towards her, and concludes it must all be a nightmare as she cries. Rika appears to console her and confess she changed the calendar even though she knows Satoko likes to do it. She apologizes, and Satoko embraces her crying Rika's name, which leads to Takano embracing Jirō while calling his name at the conclusion of Matsuribayashi-hen. Satoko watches with horror. | On Monday, June 18, 1984, Rika takes Satoko to the bookstore to explain her dream. Satoko tries to laugh it off, but Rika is insistent and resolves to study on her own. Satoko inwardly resolves to simply prevent her from studying. | At school, Satoko convinces Rika to put down her study guide to enjoy "Endless Fractal Baseball." After they enjoy the game and walk home, Satoko explains to rika what will happen if she joins Rika in her dream. Rika promises her that will not happen, and Satoko agrees, "one last time," to trust her . .. | . . . which naturally means Satoko finds herself in the same situation as she was at St. Lucia's. She confronts Rika in the main hall. Rika insists that it is Satoko who put herself below her. Satoko embraces Rika as she regrets that this was not the response she wanted. "So, let's begin!" she says into Rika's ear. She then vows that, next time, she will not let Rika deceive her. This shocks Rika. When she tries to ask Satoko what she means, Satoko interrupts to offer the traditional St. Lucia greeting to "my traitorous Rika." She raises her left hand, snaps her fingers, and the chandelier falls upon them. | ||

| Eua watches Satoko's murder-suicide by chandelier. At the bookstore, Satoko refuses to share Rika's dream. To Rika's protests that they will remain best friends at St. Lucia's, Satoko screams back that they she is lying. She demands that she choose between her and her "fancy school." Rika cannot. Satoko stands on a guard rail, then falls back into the path of a truck as she snaps her fingers. Satoko wakes up on June 16, 1984. She drags Rika to a forest at sunrise to show her Hinamizawa. Rika excitedly starts to explain her dream which leads to Satoko cutting her own throat with a finger snap. | At school, Satoko tries to prevent Rika from studying from her preparation book. Thwarted, she drives a pencil into her own throat with a finger snap. | At the water wheel, the two argue, then fight, then they both fall into the irrigation stream. Satoko wakes holding her head in the Realm of Time Fragments declaring Rika "stupid." Eua, who had delightfully watched all of this, explains that Rika lived through endless years which has only strengthened her resolve to leave Hinamizawa. In response to Satoko's confusion, she invites Satoko to experience it in one of the fragments, and she relives Keiichi killing Mion and Shion with her brother's bat. Satoko suggests that she needs more education to understand Rika, and she resolves to experience all of Rika's past lives. When Eua warns her that it will take a hundred years, Satoko responds that that is not a problem. | After a montage of such lives, Satoko concludes that she must break Rika's will again. To do this, she asks that she and Rika share the same fragments, then asks if Rika remembers her lives. Eua explains that the "horn" that granted Rika the power to loop was "damaged" which prevents Rika from remembering the events just prior to her deaths. Satoko declares that she will not let Rika win, since her love for her is so great. | |||

| On June 12, 1983, the gang gather at Mion's uncle's gaming store for the game tournament. With finger snaps indicating new lives, Satoko wins the memorization card game to the admiration of the rest. Back in the Realm of Time Fragments, Eua compliments her for being more resourceful than Rika. Satoko replies that Rika merely hopes the dice will land in her favor; she takes action. Satoko asks for her name, but Eua refuses to reveal it to her. She invites her to give her one, then takes Satoko's confused stammering to create "Eua." With flashbacks, Satoko asks about how other characters can remember events from other lives. Eua explains that looping causes small changes that accumulate over time. | Teppei experiences "bad dreams." In one he is discovered dead in his apartment, while in the other a gang beats and murders him in his apartment. This leads him to wonder what he is doing with his life. He goes to a pachinko parlor, and watches a father with his very happy young daughter. He then sits alone in a park. Finally, he decides to travel to Hinamizawa. He encounters Satoko, who stares back at him stunned. He offers her some treats he obtained in exchange for his winnings and asks if he should win more, if he can see her again. That night, it is Satoko who remains awake staring out of her window as she looks at the box of treats Teppei gave her. | On July 4th Satoko finds herself blocked by a group of delinquents. They threaten her, but Teppei appears to defend her. At the police station, he is surprised to learn that Satoko vouched for him. When he sees her outside, he admits that he has been having bad dreams where he relives his "shitty life" over and over. He promises to never hit her again, but when he holds out his hand, Satoko experiences a flashback of him beating her. He apologizes. As he walks away he notes that should they encounter one another again, he hopes they can have another nice chat. Satoko stares at him as he leaves, then looks at her shaking hand. | ||||

| In the Realm of Time Fragments, Satoko admits she did not expect the change in her uncle. Eua reminds her that memories will accumulate over loops. When she asks if this will prove a difficulty, Satoko explains that she needs to deal with one particular bird in a cage. Takano experiences a flashback to a Matsuribayashi-hen world where Okonogi reveals to her that it is Nomura who has ordered her suicide. She places his gun in her mouth, screams, fires, and wakes up at her desk. Her phone rings and Nomura informs her that their plans have reached their final stages. When Takano appears reticent, Nomura reminds her how her grandfather will be seen as a laughing stock. Takano experiences a flashback to the rejection of his thesis. Her point being made, Nomura reminds her that it is critical that she inject Tomitake with H173. | Takano retrieves a briefcase that contains a picture album. She looks at some of the pictures of her as a child with Hifumi and starts to cry. She then notices a letter addressed to her. Meanwhile, Rika accompanies Satoko on the way to the clinic, with Satoko complaining about having to have an exam on her day off. Rika plays this off as well as deflecting Satoko's question regarding what is the medication she must take. Satoko mutters to herself, "You're such a liar." In the exam room, Takano compliments Satoko's test results and suggests that she may be able to cease her medication. She then reveals that she may quite her job. She flashes back to reading the letter that was written by Hifumi to her when he was suffering from dementia. He declares how proud he is of her pursuing his studies, but he does ask if it prevented her from enjoying a wonder life, and if it did, his joy would turn to sorrow. Back in the present, Takano confesses to Satoko that some are using her. | At the night of the Watanagashi Festival, Satoko sneaks away to observe Takano talk to Jirō at the Saiguden. The next day, the Banken have arrived to secure the area, and the scene shifts to the Realm of Time Fragments where Eua remarks on the end of Rika's cycle of tragedies, and Satoko responds by promising to unleash a new cycle. The scene shifts to Takano in the clinic leaving Jirō to get his "prophylactic" shot. She decides against it, but Satoko follows her and, when Takano has left, loops repeatedly to crack the combination to her briefcase. | She leaves the clinic with a box that contains a syringe and ampule of H173.
