Prologue

The block calendar reads "Weekend, 19, June, 1983."

The scene pans down to the heavy metal doors of the Sonozaki bunker. Inside, Mion walks down a corridor. She carries her grandmother on her back. As the scene passes over various hung up impliments of dismemberment which consist primarily of large forms of rakes attached to chains, Mion apologizes to her grandmother, but she insists that she needs an honest answer.png.png from her. The scene then reveals that Oryō is hanging on the cross. Mion asks her to confirm that she is the one behind it: that she uses her power as one of the heads of the Three Families to control Oyashiro-sama's curse.

Oryō hangs limp and silent.

Sweating, Mion calls out to her, then touches her, then reacts in shock. She claims that she did not mean to kill her. She then realizes, out loud, that she now has no method to protect Keiichi from the curse. She cries into her hands for a moment, then stops and realizes that there are two other families.

The scene shifts to a phone. Kimiyoshi answer.png.pngs. Mion addresses him as "grandpa," and Kimiyoshi recognizes her voice. He asks what is going on, and she apologizes for calling so late. She then claims that her grandmother needs to speak to him. He responds that it is probably about the stolen car. Mion states that her grandmother would like to speak to him personally about it. He agrees to come over. With a smile, Mion states that they will be waiting. The scene pulls back to show Shion's body on the floor before her.

First Half

Kimiyoshi comes to find himself in a chair with a drape over his legs in the Sonozaki torture room. Mion notes that he has awoken as she enters the room. He demands to know what is going on. Looking at the taser in her hand, Mion observes this is good since this time he woke up. She fires it. Kimiyoshi demands to know why she is doing this, and she responds that she has some questions for him, that, as a head of one of the Three Families, only he can answer.png.png. She claims that she knows that the Families use Oyashiro-sama 's curse as a cover for killing anyone that bothers them or does not fit in with the village. Shocked, Kimiyoshi insists that he has no idea what she is talking about. Ignoring his protests, Mion continues to claim that Oryō gave the orders as to whom should be targeted. The scene passes to the now empty cross as Mion asks if what she claimed is really true.

s04e06 fingernails.pngKimiyoshi stammers that he has no idea what she is talking about, but Mion interrupts him to claim that now the Sonozaki control, but in the past it use to be the Kimiyoshi. He agrees that "back before the war," and Mion continues that the Kimiyoshi family must have been pretending to follow Oryō's orders when they were really using the curse for their own reasons. Over his denials, Mion notes that in the previous year they took three of Shion's fingernails to make her atone for her errors.

She dramatically pulls away the drape to reveal that his hands are in the fingernail torture contraption. She muses that she wonders how many fingernails it will take for him to tell the truth. Kimiyoshi begs that he does not know anything. As he struggles, she kindly notes that he always treated her kindly, and she really likes him. She continues over his begging that all she wants to do is save "Kei-chan." She approaches him and asks what must be done prevent the village from carrying out the order to demon him away. As he insists that he knows nothing but promises to do whatever he can in his power as the mayor, Mion applies the extractor on his middle fingernail. He insists that he will talk to Oryō as Mion, in tears, begs that she really does not want to do this. She slams her fist down on the device removing his fingernail in such graphic detail it is censored. He screams and the scene, which focuses on his face, moves up to the dark ceiling as his scream fades. It returns to reveal Mion standing before him panting. She is covered with sprays of blood, and he is slumped in the chair. When it focuses on her, the scene reveals that Kimiyoshi has nails driven into his head. With tears streaming from her eyes, Mion concludes that he did not know anything, and there is only one great family left.

The block calendar reads: "Monday, June 20, 1983."

With a view inside the school, Chie's voice is heard explaining to her students that some of them might have heard that Mayor Kimiyoshi has been missing since the day before. In the class, Rika reacts with visible shock. Glasses-Chan turns to Tomita Daiki next to her and asks if he thinks Kimiyoshi was demoned away. The scene shifts to Rika starring ahead as he replies that the curse did not happen this year. From her seat, Mion stares at Rika.

s04e06 rika and keiichi.pngOutside the school, children are heard playing. Rika cutely places her hand on Keiichi's head and asks him if he did something bad the night before. Keiichi asks her if he can tell her a story about kittens. As he explains what happened by this story, Mion listens in from behind the building. As depicted in the Question Arc Watadamashi-hen, when Keiichi asks what the "kittens" should do, Rika laughs in her Adult Voice, her eyes blaze, and she mocks Keiichi for condemning this world. Mion witnesses all of this.

s04e06 mion hair in wind.pngWhen the wind dramatically blows Rika's hair, it then blows Mion who, angry, concludes that she was correct that it was the last great family responsible, and it is Furude Rika who controls the curse.

The scene is interrupted by a ball striking Keiichi's leg. Satoko rushes up in pursuit of it. She scolds Keiichi that if he has enough time to sit around, he should grab the ball and join her and the rest. As Tomita and Okumura rush up behind her, Satoko, dramatically, announces that they are playing "super slaughter sludge explosion murder dodgeball." Keiichi stammers in reaction. Rika, now pleasant and cute, calls his name in her Child Voice and tells him he should play with them. Keiichi can only exhale in shock and confusion, but he eventually picks up the ball and walks away with Satoko and the rest.

Rika stands in her place watching him leave. She loses her cute expression, but she is interrupted by Mion addressing her. She turns in surprise to see Mion behind her, her eyes obscured by her bangs. When she asks her what is wrong, it is revealed that Mion is crying. She tells Rika that she did not want to believe it. She seizes Rika. Holding her aloft by the neck, she suggests to the struggling Rika that she is sure Rika did not want this, but since she was born into the Furude family, she has been forced to bear this burden. Mion repeats that she is sorry. Rika's struggles start to subside; the crying Mion vows that, when this is over, she will join her.

Rika goes limp. Mion slings her body over her shoulder and states that she is still not done: "I have to protect Kei-chan!"

Back in the corridor, Chie's voice commands the students to start their afternoon class. Inside, she looks and asks where Rika is. Keiichi, in the process of sitting down, reacts with surprise. The scene focuses on her empty chair with Satoko, sitting at the adjacent desk, partially obscured. Her bangs hide her eyes. Chie asks Headband-chan and Twin Tails-chan if anyone knows where she is. Keiichi looks around, but he is interrupted by Satoko who looks at him suspiciously as she notes that he was just talking with her. All of the class turn to look at Keiichi. He stammers that while they were just talking he does not know where she went after. Mion pauses as if thinking and suggests that she saw her talking to someone behind the school. Satoko suspiciously asks if it was not Keiichi. Mion answer.png.png that it was not but concedes that she did not get a good look. Desperate, Keiichi asks her what she did see. Mion reacts then suggests he looked like a man in a construction uniform. Satoko insists that there is no one like that at their school.

s04e06 rika disposal.pngThere is a view of the grounds of the school through the window. The scene shifts to the outside where Rena calls out to Rika at the trash incinerator. Keiichi walks behind her calling out as well. He makes his way to the latrines, but cannot open the door to one of the latrines. Mion desperately calls him over. He comes out, and Mion claims that she thought she saw something on the roof. He volunteers to look. As he runs off, Mion stares into the latrine area. After a focus on her eyes, she carries Rika's body over her shoulder. She opens the latrine door and tosses her body against the wall. Silently, she pulls up Rika's body by her arms, suspends her, then drops her into the toilet. Her head and arms remain outside. Mion stares in silence for a moment then starts stomping on her head with increasing rage trying to force Rika's body down. She finally succeeds. s04e06 mion stares down.pngShe stares down into the toilet as the sound of higurashi flies c rying buzzing increases until the screen goes black with the sound of the door of the latrine slamming shut.

Second Half

Mion locks the door to the latrine. Satisfied, she feels that that should delay those trying to carry out the curse. With wild eyes, she declares that this is her chance to get Keiichi somewhere safe.

The scene pans the walk home in Hinamizawa. Concerned, Rena asks the walking Keiichi what is wrong. With Mion slightly behind him, he confesses that it is all his fault. While Rena asks, "It's your fault," Mion stares ahead. When the view centers on her face as she asks him why he thinks it is his fault, it reveals that behind her are two men in construction worker's clothes standing at the crossroads outside of a van. Keiichi starts to reply, but he is startled by the presence of the men. They turn away from them and walk towards their van. Keiichi tells Rena that it is nothing. The three pass by the men who appear to try to obscure their faces.

s04e06 shion disposal.png The higurashi c ry as the scene transitions to an arial view of the Sonozaki mansion. It focuses on one of the cameras, then the blood smeared chair that previously held Kimiyoshi. Mion, changed into her kimono, walks with Shion's body draped over her back and shoulders. Panting, she slowly makes her way to the well. She deposits Shion on the edge then pushes her over. With a view up from the well, she peers down.

The scene cuts to black with the sound of a phone ringing. Keiichi answer.png.pngs as the scene, with higurashi d oing what higurashi d o, opens in Mion's room in the Sonozaki mansion. He answer.png.pngs desperately asking if it is Shion, then changes, when Mion does not respond, to ask if it is Mion. With a wild look that When They C ry Wiki Cannot Adequately Describe™, Mion commands him to come over immediately.

The scene shifts to an arial view of the school. Police have gathered on the grounds. Satoko walks down the stairs inside and hears Chie begging the police to find Rika. She sees her bowing politely to the departing Kumagai. Chie stands straight, turns, and is surprised to see Satoko. Satoko asks her what the police said about Rika. Putting on a pleasant expression, Chie assures her that they will find her, and while she knows Satoko is worried, they will find her. For her part, Satoko looks sad and asks what she should do. Chie cheerfully encourages her to go home so she can greet Rika with a big smile when she comes back. Satoko lowers her head, which allows her bangs to obscure her eyes in shadow, as she replies that, knowing Rika, she will come back pretending that nothing happened. She looks up with a smile as she finishes. Chie relaxes in response and agrees.

A dog sniffs the grounds. The scene reveals that it is a police dog. Some distance away, Satoko voices the request that they find her as her eyes blaze. She muses that Rika going missing is the worse thing that could happen to her. With her eyes returned to normal, she turns and continues that perhaps she should ask her directly since it will be the fastest way.

s04e06 mion reassures keiichi.png At the waterwheel in her school clothes, Mion tells Keiichi that he is nervous, but she knows how he feels right now. Keiichi sweats, but his face relaxes a bit with her reassurance. However, she turns with a sad face that startles him. Her face relaxes into a smile and she invites him to talk at her home. The reflexion of the two walking towards her home is viewed in the sideview mirror of the van. The man inside reports on his radio that Sonozaki Mion has made contact with Maebara Keiichi. Ōishi replies on the radio that he is to join the detectives around the Sonozaki property and to continue his surveillance. As the two continue their walk, the detective acknowledges. Some distance away, in his car, Kumagai asks Ōishi if he believes the Sonozaki are connected to the disappearance of Kimiyoshi. Ōishi sighs and notes that Ōryo called him over, and he has been missing since.

Kumagai asks him what Ōryo has to say about this. Ōishi replies that she refuses to see them, but Mion claims he went home right after their talk. Kumagai asks if he thinks Mion is lying; Ōishi sighs again, "who knows?" Kumagai continues that if she is, then that means the mayor is still on the Sonozaki property. He then asks why they do not just barge in. Ōishi patiently replies that if they did without a good reason they might put up a fight. Kumagai grunts in concession. Smiling, Ōishi adds that if they do have a good reason, and Kumagai interrupts that that is why Ōishi has surveilled them. Ōishi laughs and replies that the moment the police hear the quietest scream they can move in.

At the entrance to the mansion, Keiichi remarks that Mion's front gate is huge. She invites him in. As he does so, one of the detectives dressed in construction worker's clothes peers around the corner of the building.

The higurashi c ry as the scene shifts to the entrance to the Furude Shrine. Satoko walks towards the home she share s d with Rika.

Inside her living room, Mion conforts Keiichi. He asks her if he can ask her a question: "why does someone have to die on the night of Watanagashi every year?" She remains silent. The scene shifts to Satoko removing a large bottle from the cabinet under the kitchen sink. She walks away with it. In the sitting room in the foreground there is a clipboard with a piece of paper in it lying on the table. The scene reveals that it is an announcement from the Sonozaki that they are delighted to share their soy sauce. It instructs the recipient to simply bring an empty bottle.

Mion stands with Keiich in the entrance to the Sonozaki underground. He asks her what the place is, but she simply silently walks in. He follows her. She places her hands on the inner door and replies that this is the safest place on the Sonozaki grounds. The scene shifts to Ōishi's car. He receives a report that there is movement in front of the Sonozaki mansion, but it is "not one of them." In response to his request for explanation, the detective informs Ōishi that they seem to have a visitor. The scene shifts back to Mion. She looks flatly at Keiichi, now behind bars, who begs her to let him help her. She looks down and asks him if he remembers the game tournament and when he gave her the doll. With a blush she looks at him and smiles as she recalls that he treated her as a girl and it made her happy. Keiichi reacts with some surprise. More seriously, she confesses that she loves him, and that is why she needs to protect him. She explains that the only way to protect him is to end this tradition once and for all.

Keiichi calmly says her name, and Mion awaits him to continue, but they are interrupted by an alarm. The scene shifts to the desk with monitors. Keiichi asks if they are here, and Mion replies that it is their minion. The monitor reveals Satoko is at the door holding the bottle. The scene, with a dramatic cord from Kawai Sensei, focuses on Satoko's face.

She grins.

Mion muses that it is interesting, and she supposes that she should say hello. Keiichi starts to ask her what she is going to do, but Mion interrupts him to tell him that she has to greet a guest. She opens a drawer and pulls out a hand gun. The scene shifts to outside her massive gate where Satoko waits. Mion opens the side door, and Satoko teases her about making her wait. Mion pretends embarrassment that she did not hear the intercom. When she asks Satoko why she is there, Satoko reminds her of her family's offer to share their soy sauce. They banter: Mion clearly does not know about this offer, and Satoko dramatically expresses her disappointment at coming to her home and not receiving the soy sauce. Mion invite her in, and a detective dressed in the construction worker clothes radios that Mion has let Satoko in. Ōishi asks him if he sees Keiichi; the detective responds that he does not from his position. Ōishi complains to Kumagai that people keep coming in but never come out. Kumagai reminds him that if Kimiyoshi is in there then what are the Sonozaki doing. Ōishi shouts into the radio a command that all should be ready to go in, then he announces that he is going in.

Keiichi slams his shoulder into the door of his cell and succeeds in breaking through. He sees the monitors that show numerous detectives dresses as workers on the grounds and communicating on their radios. Keiichi swears and then finds himself locked in by another door. He attempts to break it down as the scene shifts to black as the higurashi c ry. It resolves to a floor then an outside view of one of the houses on the compound with Mion asking who told Satoko to come. Following behind her, Satoko repeats that, as she told her, she received a notice. Irritated, Mion notes that though Rika is still missing, she came over for soy sauce. The scene reveals Satoko holding up her bottle as Mion scratches at her neck. Satoko expresses surprise that Mion has not heard that Rika came out of her hiding right after she left. The scene focuses on Mion, scratching at her neck, as she asks, "did she now?" Satoko explains that Rika hid herself to scare all of them, and she should not worry anymore.

s04e06 satoko gun.png Mion reacts by angrily scratching her neck. She demands that the smiling Satoko give her an honest answer.png.png: who told her to come? When she adds that she is done with her lies, Satoko mockingly suggests that is seems that Mion knows where Rika is. As she asks Satoko is she wants to know where Rika is, she draws her gun and points it at Satoko. Undaunted, Satoko insists that she does. Pointing her gun at Satoko's forehead, Mion insists that she first tell her who sent her, who is in charge, and who gave the order. She continues that she knows they are after Keiichi, but Satoko only replies by asking where is Rika. This shocks Mion, and Satoko continues to ask if she is still alive. Shocked, Mion declares that if Satoko is not going to answer.png.png her, as the scene shifts to her pulling the trigger.

With a view of the roof of the building, the gunshot is heard.

The bottle Satoko held falls to the ground. A gun barrel smokes. Mion looks down shocked and in pain. She holds her belly where blood is spreading. She asks "Why? How?" as she drops her own gun. She falls to the ground to reveal that Satoko is holding her own gun. She repeats her question: "where is Rika?" Mion angrily shouts "Satoko" as she reaches for her gun, but with another shot, Satoko blows away her fingers. She genially apologizes that she is quite skilled with firearms. She kicks away Mion's gun then sarcastically thanks Mion for teaching her. With a view of her bloody revolver and severed finger, Mion screams Satoko's name again, but Satoko kicks her in the face. As she explains that she wants to hear Mion's answer.png.png to her question, she presses her hot barrel into Mion's wound. Mion laughs, mocking Satoko that she is too late since Rika is already dead. She mockingly apologizes for it, but Satoko renews her inquiry. Mion screams that she strangled her like a bird, and she hopes Rika was dead, because she disposed of her in the latrine. So either Rika died from strangulation or, as Mion rather uncharitably boasts, she drowned in their own "piss and shit!"

She laugh manically, but Satoko simply seems satisfied. She deems this good. When Mion questions this responds, Satoko answer.png.png by shooting her in the head. She flatly explains that if Mion can describe Rika's death in such detail then she must have seen her to her death. She states that she will see her, "Rika," again as she places her gun to her head. Her finger snaps, and she blows her brains out. She falls, the gun lands on the floor, and the scene focuses on both her and Mion's bodies as the higurashi c ry and the scene transitions into the End Titles.

Post-End Titles

Adult-Voiced Rika returns to announce that coffee is still for closers and the next arc Tatariakashi-hen and episode.

Characters

Referbacks and Forwards

  • The Bunker: this place leads to the Sonozaki torture room and the infamous well where in previous arcs Shion disposes of the bodies, including Mion's. In Matsuribayashi-hen, she, Kasai, and the Rest of the Gang – including Hanyū-chan – take refuge in it.
  • "Feeling Cross?": this is the same cross Shion tortures Satoko to death upon in ARC/EPISODE.
  • "What Lovely Fingernails You Have, Shion!": EPISODE here. Akane and the twins' Dad remain disappoint.
  • "Who Let the Dogs Out!": fooling even When They C ry Wiki in the Question Arc EPISODE, these are not the Yamainu. Arg!
  • "A Meme Internet Symbol is Born!": infamously, Rika uses the pretext of the Sonozaki offer to share their soy sauce to try to inject Shion with the treatment for the Hinamizawa Syndrome. This fails, leading to Rika's suicide to avoid torture, and Shion laughing in a manner that has become an internet sensation. Having made herself experience these same past lives of Rika EPISODE, Satoko uses the same pretext.
  • "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner": the Question Arc EPISODE did not reveal whom Mion saw on the monitors. It is implied it was the police.

Trivia

  • Cens[CENSORED – Ed.]hp: When They C ry Wiki confesses finding it odd that the fingernail removal is censored, as is Rena stabbing Keiichi, but Rika's disembowelment by Satoko is not.

Cultural References

  • Kimono Styles: oddly enough, this gives a good overview.
  • "Sigh Here!": the hanko is still a significant thing in . . . Japan! There are too many cases in both film and real life where one who gains control of the seal gains control of bank accounts.
  • "Rika's on the Sauce Again!": work with When They C ry Wiki here. Though Rika would ask for shōyu (醤油).
  • Two Shots: When They C ry Wiki is disappoint that there is not an obvious trope where you hear two shots and . . . "who got shot! Not the hero[ine – Ed.]!" However, it is an old trope, and Higurashi being Higurashi, it is the hero[ine – Ed.] that "gets it."

Memorable Moments

  • "I [Don't – Ed.] Believe What You Said!": The previous second season affirms that the "curse" deaths and disappearances were the work of Takano and her minions. There is the suggestion t hat Oryō and the rest are content that some think that they are behind them. This episode makes clear that none of the families were involved. This suggests that any deaths and disappearances that occurred in the years prior to when much of Higurashi takes place may also have not been arranged by either of the families in that Kimiyoshi does not concede that in the past they were but this no longer happens.
