Arg!

The episode opens with a view of the roof of the Maebara house in the morning with sounds of birds. Inside, Keiichi slowly wakes. He rises, open his window, and views a majestic view of Hinamizawa.

He yawns. Rena sings and hums to herself in her kitchen as she prepares food. With a smile, she bobs her head to the rhythm of her humming. The scene shifts to a view of the Sonozaki house, Mion gathers together her ponytail. She also smiles to herself. The scene then shifts to a view of the outside of the house Satoko and Rika share. Satoko walks the hallway as she adjusts her book bag. She delivers the first lines of the new season by turning and asking "what is it?" Rika is staring intently at the paper calendar that reads "Friday, June 10, 1983." She turns, takes on a happy look, and insists it is "nothing" and emits the new season's first "Nipaa~!" She then rushes past Satoko. Satoko watches her, then, as she observes the calendar, she comments as if to Rika that no matter how much she stares at the calendar, until she accepts Hinamizawa in her heart. . . . She pauses as she closes her eyes, then continues that she will never escape June of 1983 as she opens her blazing eyes and smiles maniacally, then grits her teeth. . . maniacally.

The scene sifts into the new opening sequence with the opening title song "Analogy" by Ayane. First Rika appears looking sad with flashes around her. This then shifts to Keiichi and Rena standing in opposition at the dump. The view shows Keiichi's angry face. It then reverses to the two in a room with a view of Rena's determined face. Flashes show Shion with her hand on her chest looking outwards at the Sonozaki home. In opposition, her sister is behind her facing the entrance. With flashes, they reverse with Mion's hand similarly placed on her chest and her sister behind her at the entrance to St. Lucia's. There is a quick view of Rena with a Maniacal Smile™ falling backward, then the scene focuses with one half on Rika's right eye. The other half is black. She closes her eye, and the black is replaced by Satoko opening her left eye.

The scene pulls out to show the two of them, as they are in 1983, standing in the front of their classroom holding their hands. The scene cuts to Rika's right eye blazing. She closes it, and Satoko's left eye appears, opens, and reveals it is blazing. The scene cuts back to the classroom in St. Lucia's. Both are at their young teen ages, dressed in their St. Lucia uniforms, and standing back-to-back with Satoko beginning to walk away.

Time fragments fall like snow. The figure of Hanyū with her eyes closed falls with them. The scene focuses on the couch in the Realm of Timw Fragments with the figure of Eua reclining and stifling a yawn.

The teenaged Rika and Satoko's hands come together and their two faces come close as if they are about to kiss which sends When They C ry Wiki to summon Staff to bring the smelling salts! Before they can, the scene is covered by blood splatter.

Teenaged Rika in the Realm of Time Fragments shouts. Satoko shouts back. The two rush towards one another like two beams of light that then collide in an explosion. The debris resolves into the teenaged Satoko in her uniform running down a path between the rice paddies in Hinamizawa. She seems to be trying to reach Rika, who is also teenaged, in her uniform, but her back is turned to Satoko with her hair flowing. When Satoko tries to reach out to her, she falls back as if falling into an abyss. She seems to dissolve into black smoke, but before she does, Rika's hand grasps hers. She looks up with surprise.

With more flashes the figures of Shion, Mion, Keiichi, and Rena stand smiling with smiles almost maniacal. They are clearly older: Shion has a different dress; Mion wears a "letter" jacket with an "H" and a necklace with a ring hung from it; Keiichi similarly wears clothes different than his usual; with only Rena seeming to retain her "sailor" clothing.

The scene pans up the steps to the Furude Shrine. It then zooms through the forest to enter the Saiguden, move past the statue of Oyashiro-sama, to be broken by Eua's staff appearing. This proves to be the temple in the Realm of Fragments. Fragments quickly appear with a face of Satoko, Keiichi, Rena, Rika, and Mion on an individual fragment.

The scene cuts to young Satoko and Rika holding hands as they stand at the observation point overlooking Hinamizawa. The scene passes up into the twighlight sky as Akane reaches her crescendo, and the scene is replaced by the title of the season.

As with episodes from the previous season, there is no episode title.

Still happily humming, Rena dramatically removes her apron, ties up an elegant bundle, then covers dishes containing a breakfast. She notices a door open, to her surprise. She enters a dark room and calls out to her still sleeping father that she is leaving. He mutters for her to take care of herself. Concerned, she asks if he is okay and should she bring him some water or medicine. He rises, puts on his glasses, and insists he just drank too much the night before in Okinomiya. As her right hand grips the door frame tightly, she asks if she was drinking with "Rina-san" again. He laughs as he compliments Rina then adds he would love "Reina" to meet her. Rena cuts him off by noting the time – 7:26 A.M. – and declares she will be late meeting her friends. He bids her an awkward fairwell as she slides the doors to his room close.

Outside is sunny with views of leaves and Gentle Piano Music. Rena dutifully waits for Keiichi. She reacts with excitement as he approaches. As he walks past, he chides her for being early and suggests she could sleep in every now and then. Meanwhile, at the waterwheel, Mion waits with a look of slight irritation. She brightens and chides Keiichi and Rena for taking their time. Keiichi teases back that she is the girl who always takes her time.

The scene shifts to an outside view of the school. There is a view of thumbtacks in the slot to open the sliding door to the classroom. There is an inkstone on the classroom floor. Rika kneels behind the stone and brightly compliments Satoko's elaborate trap for the day. Satoko, standing on a chair, finishes wedging an eraser between the door and its sill, then turns and asks Rika whatever does she mean. She jumps down from the chair and genially lectures that setting multiple traps for ones "hapless enemy" is the very essence of setting traps. Rika claps as she compliments her skill.

Satoko hears Mion giggling and cautions Rika to be quiet. From outside, they hear him mock: "Trying to test my skills, are you?" Satoko pushes Rika away from the door. This reveals that the blackboard has Satoko listed as the helper for the day. From outside, Rena asks what is wrong, and Keiichi, dramatically, cautions her to stay back since "she's here!" Rena asks if by "she" she means, and Keiichi cuts her off with an affirmation. Meanwhile, Satoko rushes up to the door to remove the chair she left. Keiichi exclaims, "could this be any more obvious? Hōjō Satoko?!"

The scene gives a view of the door. Mion can be seen through the crack. Keiichi slides open the door without entering. The eraser falls to the floor harmlessly releasing its chalk dust. Keiichi emits a satisfied "hmmm!" then walks through the open doorway. As he does, Satoko makes a Maniacal Grin™. Keiichi promptly catches his foot on a trip road, falls forward, and crashes as he yells "off screen." The scene focuses on Satoko with her eyes closed now making a Satisfied Grin™. For her part, Rika playfully laments "poor, poor Keiichi," beginning his day badly. The scene reveals the two hiding behind the teacher's lectern. Keiichi is sprawled on the floor with Mion laughing and Rena shocked behind him. At their seats, Tomita, Okumura, Twin Tails-Chan, and Headband-Chan watch with surprise. With a view of the outside, Keiichi is heard screaming Satoko's name in anger.

The paper calendar reads "Sunday, June 12, 1983."

As Rena and Keiichi walk together, he has a large duffle bag. She thanks him for hanging out with her. She asks if they can stop somewhere. After he asks where, the higurashi c ry as the scene shifts to the entrance to the dump. She nearly enters Cute Mode as she openly wonders what can be there. She then happily runds down into the piles as Keiichi watches. He languidly asks if she wanted to climb a pile of trash. She insists, as she runs from pile to pile, that what he sees as trash, she sees as treasure. He tries to follow her, but she tells him it is fine if he waits.

She scans the area for "something cute." She sees something and enters Cute Mode. It is revealed to be "Kenta-kun." She wonders how she will retrieve him, remembers Keiichi, then turns to summon him. He is with Tomitake Jirō. She seems surprised, says Jirō's name, then sadly turns away. She kneels before the Kenta-kun 's resting place with a smile.

The higurashi continue to c ry as she and Keiichi make their way home. She laments at how stuck Kenta-kun is, but Keiichi does not seem to pay attention to her. She asks him what is wrong, but he quickly recovers and claims that he is just sad they cannot bring him home. He continues to boast that he would have grabbed Kenta-kun by his arm and pulled him free. She rushes up to him, takes him by his gesturing arm, and warns that he would have ripped off Kenta-kun 's arm. Keiichi looks at his arm that Rena holds as she says this, then he startles when she finishes her words. He haltingly agrees that they would want Kenta-kun to have all of his arms.

Freeing his arm, he reminds her that he promised he would help her get Kenta-kun home. She enters Cute Mode, then transitions into Take Home Mode at the thought of taking Kenta-kun home with Keiichi. With a scene wipe, Keiichi hands the rewrapped lunch box she made for him back to her. They bid one another fairwell. The scene shifts to her home where she enters with the traditional "I'm home" greeting. Her father welcomes her, but she notices that he seems to be heading out. When she asks him if he is leaving so late, he admits that "she" called him wanting to see him. He promises that he will try not to be late.

She darkly remarks, "her again?" When he asks her what she said, she quickly plays it off that she meant that it is dark out so he should be careful. After he leaves, she sits dejectedly inside the entrance. She tells herself she cannot be depressed. She reminds that she dropped the "i" from her name to remove the "icky" things from her life. Alone, she vacuums. She notices a card peaking out under a file cabinet. She picks it up to discover that it is the business card of Rina from the hostess bar Blue Mermaid.

The paper calendar reads "Monday, June 13, 1983."

Outside the school, the younger students, including Glasses-chan start their walks home. Inside, the door to the classroom quickly slides open and Satoko rushes out laughing. As Rika chases after her, Satoko declares that she can never catch her, but Rika, as they rush down the stairs, happily reminds her that since this is a scavenger hunt, she can still win. Satoko replies that there can then be no hard feelings over whoever wins. Rika replies that she will give it all she can. The two smile as they stare at one another, turn then run laughing in opposite directions. Walking outside, Rena ratiocinates that, knowing "Mii-chan" she probably put the object someplace Keiichi would never find it. She startles as she realizes.

She makes her way to the storage room and sheepishly enters. She sees a wooden stair ladder leading up into the ceiling. She then turns to see Keiichi walking in. He startles when he sees her.

Meanwhile, both Rika and Satoko enter the same hallway from different directions. As Rika approaches the entrance to the storage room, she genially notes that since great minds think alike, she knew Satoko would be there, "Nipaa~!" For her part, Satoko genially suggests that the game has become a race after all, and she has no time for "Nipaas" now! The two stand at the doorway, then eagerly begin their race. They pass Rena and Keiichi who are facing one another in a stand off.

On the floor is the target: a magic marker. Rika reaches out first, but Satoko grabs and pulls a rope as she warns her.

Back in the classroom, Mion opens the door and starts to enter but is startled by the sound of a crash and Rika screaming. She recovers, laughs, and observes that it sounds like "someone" just won.

Rika sits with a sad expression whilst off-scene Satoko chides her for still proving no match for her traps then ends with her Patented Laugh. Mion gently suggests that that is enough. Rika brightens and insists that she lost but is not mad about it at all. She then produces a box which she declares is a present for Satoko. Satoko eagerly accepts it and, naturally, it turns out to be the trap with the spring boxing glove that sends Satoko sprawling with the "KO" printed on her face. Both Keiichi and Mion enjoy Satoko's comeuppance, Rena seems to stare into space. Mion asks her what is wrong, Rena comes to and apologizes that with all of the fun she is a bit exhausted.

Satoko turns from the window where she viewed her reflection of her "KO'd" face to stare at her. Rena declares she will go to the nurse's office to rest then go home. She laments "poor Kenta-kun," but Keiichi promises to help her another day. Satoko continues to watch her as she leaves. She then dramatically declares that she will wash her face. As she washes her face, she looks up with a Maniacal Smile™ then turns off the tap. With views of the staircase in the school, then the landing, then the nurse's office, the higurashi c ry. Rena lays sleeping in a cot. At its foot, Sadoko apologizes to her but blames Rika. She opens a case to reveal the syringe and ampule of H173. She continues to explain that she promises to create a Hinamizawa where she is happy. She takes Rena's right arm and asks the sleeping Rena to forgive her. She injects the sleeping Rena as she makes her Maniacal Smile™. She then looks up with her eyes blazing. She repeats: "I'm so terribly sorry."

In the late afternoon, the higurashi continue their c ry outside the school. Rena wakes, looks up, and asks, "Satoko-chan?" as she looks through the empty nurse's room. She then asks if anyone else is in the room. She declares that she has to get home. She passes a trash can in which has the discarded case and empty syringe.

She walks slowly home and touches her neck. She finds the door to her home locked and retrieves the key under one of her "treasures" outside. She opens the door to the dark home and emits a meek "I'm home." She makes her way to the kitchen, turns on a light, and finds a note from her father claiming he had to run to Okinomiya because something suddenly came up. She touches her neck again as her face grows angry. She begins to open draws and closets. She throws books to the floor. Finally, she finds a bank book revealing frequent withdrawals in Okinomiya. She says out loud that this is the settlement money her mother gave her father in their divorce. She continues that they are not suppose to touch it unless it is an emergency as she scratchers her neck hard enough to leave red marks. In a flashback, Young Re[i – Ed.]na marvels at six parfait treats on the table before her. As she happily eats one, her mother asks if she remembers the man who came to dinner with them. Reina recalls an "Uncle Akihito." She puts her hand on her head as she also remembers that she needs to stop calling him "uncle" or he will hit her. Her mother laughs and asks if she likes him. Reina grouses and pouts that she hates him because he is always teasing her. Her mother playfully insists that that is because he likes her. She reminds her daughter that they got along well at the barbecue. Reina pouts but admits that he is "sometimes" okay. As she continues to eat her treat, her mother pointedly asks her whom she likes better: her or her father. Reina bubbles that she likes "Mother," because she lets her eat these delicious parfaits.

Her mother continues to ask if she went to live in a different house than her father, which causes Reina to drop her spoon in her now empty parfait glass. Her mother continues, "whom would you want to live with?" Uncomfortable, Reina stammers in not understanding. Her mother continues to explain that she is thinking of divorcing her father and marrying Akihito.

Reina stands slamming her hands on the table, knocking over some of the treats, as she demands to know why and asks if her mother no longer loves her father. Her mother merely closes her eyes as she turns her head a bit. Reina continues to shout that her father did not do anything wrong. She insists that he did everything for her mother so she could focus on work. Other patrons stare at the scene she is making. Reina concludes that since after all of his effort she wishes to leave him she hates her. Her mother quietly replies that she is sorry that it is too late. Reina tries to insist that it is not if she has not told her father yet, but her mother places her hands on her stomach and reveals that she is pregnant.

After a focus on Reina's distorted shocked face, the scene focuses on the "Divorce Settlement Agreement" listing Ryūgū Reiko. A voice of a lawyer explains over Reina sitting dejected on the floor, that it is done, and her father must remember that he is not only not allowed to meet his ex-wife, he also cannot contact her for any reason. He instructs him that since he agreed to the terms he must not violate them. Her father squeezes the bank book in his hand. The scene shifts to an apartment in a city. Inside it is revealed that Reina and her father were in this apartment. It is now darks, and they have not moved from their places. He finally asks, "Reina," if she knows the man her mother left him for. She admits it. This shocks her father. She continues to explain that he is a funny "uncle" who gives her candy.

Her father stands and slaps her in the face. As she starts to cry, he realizes what he has done and hugs her apologizing. The now Rena voiceover explains that up to that moment she believed that she had to be nice to everyone no matter what. However she learned something: "There are some bad people in the world who don't deserve kindness." As the scene shifts to Rena sobbing as she holds the bank book in present time, she concludes that she should never have been nice to "Uncle Akihito," since he was a bad person. She angrily says out loud that she should have shunned him since he was a bad person. As she clutches at her throat, she rationalizes that if she had shunned him their family would not have broken apart. She concludes that it is her fault because she did not work hard enough.

She stands looking up at the ceiling. She declares that it is falling apart again, and she has to work hard or her family will fall apart again. She wanders the hallway of their home repeating that she has to do something.

There is a view of the road to Okinomiya, then the entrance to the section "Flower Road" which contains numerous hostess bars. Still dressed in her "sailor suit" uniform, Rena makes her way to the Blue Mermaid where a barker yells at the various passing salarymen urging them to come in. She starts to enter, but he stops her and insists that she return when she is older! As police walk their beat she runs off. The next scene shows her in the Okinomiya café. She sheepishly asks the waiter if she can have a black tea. Nearby numerous "Guys 'n Dolls" laugh and converse. She stares at her tea and wonders what she is doing there. As she sips it, a woman walks by, and another women, sitting across from Rena, addresses her as "Rina." She asks Rina about her customer. Rina replies that he is black-out drunk, and she did not want to wake him. She then adds that she ordered a bunch of expensive drinks. Rena listens. The completely sober Rina pulls out her cigarets as she explains that he will wake up, pay for them, then head back to Hinamizawa. The other laughs at her getting him to pay for alcohol she will not even drink. As Rena looks darkly into her tea cup, Rina explains that her father apparently has "boatloads of cash" from his wife when she divorced him and will jump to pay for anything she wants. The other laughs that he must be paying her a lot. Rina's face appears in the reflection of the window next to Rena. Her friend suggests that if she told him she had to pay off her ex- he would. Rina takes a puff, exhales, and agrees. This startles Rena. As Rina's friend laughs her father, Rena stands and leaves. Rina takes another puff and sighs. Her friend notices that she seems pretty depressed "for a girl with her own personal ATM." Rina confesses that the man has a teenage daughter. When her friend asks why this bothers her, Rina explains that since she was also raised by a single parent, she can sympathize. She then suggests that perhaps she should break things off. Her friend asks what happened to the Rina she thought she knew. Rina brightens and explains that if Rena's father becomes more serious, it will be a pain for her.

Walking through the streets, with the view distorted, Rena repeats "I have to work harder." She staggers as she walks and starts scratching at her throat.

The Ending Titles are similar to previous season in that they are a series of watercolors. The end titles song is "Missing Promise" by Suzuki Konomi. Satoko and Rika stand in the air against the clouds and sky with their backs turned to one another. There is a flash and wipe as Konomi-chan begins singing to reveal the statue of Oyashiro-sama in the Saiguden. The scene moves down the statue to reveal a somewhat pensive Hanyu-chan. The scene shifts to follow Eua standing in front of her couch. She has a grin. Then Satoko and Rika look at one another as they lay in the grass. This is replace by an overhead view of the class of the Hinamizawa school, which include the Gang, the various chans and named students, as well as their teacher. They appear to be regarding and waving at the viewer. The scene shift to Satoko and Rika racing one another as they leave their home to go to school. It then focuses on Satoko's face with her eyes closed in the Realm of Time Fragments. She slowly opens her eyes, then looks up with a smile. The scene then shifts to her and Rika in bathing suits playing in the river. The scene then focuses on the back of Rika's head, She turns with a smile and her eyes closed. She opens them.

Both Rika and Satoko stand in space over a fire with the sparks and light streaming up. Their skirts appear slightly blown up, and they hold hands. Normally, When They C ry Wiki would make some sort of joke, but the scene is not like that as the Gallery demonstrates.

Adult-Voiced Rika returns to announce the title of the arc Oniakashi-hen and the next episode.
