Arg!

Prologue

The paper calendar reads "Monday, June 13, 1983."

Rena quietly repeats "harder" as she reaches for packing tape in a hardware store. She tosses it into a basket which also contains rope. She walks past hammers repeating, "Have to work . . . harder." She picks up blue tarp, then staggers as she repeats this phrase robotically into the opening credits.

First Half

The paper calendar reads, "June 14, 1983."

In the kitchen, Rena deliberately cuts vegetables. Her father staggers in and greets her. She has a smile, and she pleasantly returns his greeting. He offers him water. He asks her what she was doing with things from a hardware store. Rena stops chopping and startles; he explains that he saw a bag from a hardware store in her room. He suggests that she must have traveled all the way to Okinomiya. After a beat, she recovers to pleasantly insist that she found a really cute statue at the dam construction site, and since it is so big, she needed some tools to help her bring it home. Resigned, her father guesses that their "little garden display" will get bigger. He tells her to be careful, and she insists he does not have to worry about her as emphatically splits an onion.

She walks in the site carrying a plastic bag. She makes her way to her abandoned van. As she stows away the bag, she declares that no one will find it there.

Keiichi waits at the usual spot he meets Rena every day. He wonders what is taking her so long. He hears her call to him. He turns to see her running towards him. He admonishes her for being late; she apologizes. When she asks if he was waiting long, he retorts that in a few seconds he would have abandoned her. She protests that he promised he would never abandon her. He reminds her that he also said he would if she was late. Rena whines the he is mean.

In class, Keiichi continues his lecture. While he has told her she should "sleep in," every now and then, he never thought she actually would. Mion adds her surprise in that Rena never sleeps in. Satoko joins in to chide her for being slovenly. Behind Satoko, Rika looks on with concern. She advises that if Rena sleeps too long with her belly out, she will get a stomachache. Rena protest that she did not sleep in; she had things to do that morning. This causes Satoko to ask her what she had to do, and Rika quickly suggests that they can help her. Rena sheepishly turns away and insists that it is something she has to do herself. They all encourage her. She thanks them then admits that she cannot attend the Club activities that afternoon. Mion admits that if Rena is busy she cannot insist that she attend. With a view of the clouds through the windows, Mion continues that the weather report suggests they will have rain, and she decides that they should cancel the activities. Keiichi agrees that the Club is not fun without everyone present. Rena apologizes. s04e02 satoko stares intently.png At the end of school, Rena rushes out. She is watched by Satoko who stares at her intently.

In a store, Rena picks up trash bags, then cotton towels, then a box of "odor away." She then approaches a display of saws. She inspects two. Checking the heft, she picks one. The scene shifts to her walking into the dump at twilight. She adds her bag to the rest in her van. s04e02 rina approaches rena.png Returning home, before she can open her door, she hears a woman call out a greeting. While she stares ahead in shock, behind her, Rina smiles pleasantly. Rina apologizes for dropping by unexpectedly. As Rena stares ahead in a manner When They C ry Wiki cannot adequately describe, Rina coyly turns her head and asks how she can even start. She introduces herself as a "friend" then babbles about properly introducing herself as the scene focuses on Rena's Stare that When They C ry Wiki Cannot Adequately Describe™. Before she can, Rena turns with a Pleasant Expression™ as she responds that it is unnecessary since she already knows who Rina is. Rina responds happily, and Rena continues with a slight bow that her father say she is really great. Rina replies that her father is also "really great," and address her as "Reina-chan."

Pleasantries thus exchang'd, Rena, pleasantly, asks her what she needs. Rina bashfully contends that she thought she might come by to meet her. Rena suddenly steps forward to close the distance, but bubbles her excitement that Rina came to see her. She insists that she has been wanting to meet her as well. Rina laughs and concludes that Rena is happy she came. She adds that she is glad to hear that since she hoped they could be friends.

Thunder starts.

Rina, pleasantly, asks "Rina-san" if she could help her look for treasure. Rina readily agrees since it sounds fun. Rena, still pleasant, does warn it is a bit of a walk. Rina looks, well, back and to the left, as she asks if it is far away since she hopes that it does not start raining. Ever pleasant, Rena bubbles that the weather report stated that it would not rain. Rina quickly agrees that it will be a good chance for them to get to know one another. Rena jumps up and down in excitement with her reply, but she does add that she needs to gather some things. She quickly runs off behind her house, and Rina watches her. Alone, she giggles to herself. Rena quckly returns and thanks her for waiting. As thunder rolls, the scene focuses on the fact that Rena is holding her nata covers in its cloth bag. Rena asks her what it is; Rena raises it to hold the covered blade in her left hand as she responds that it is something they will need to dig up the treasure they are after. Rina replies that this is serious business. Rena laughs and adds, "let's go, Rina-san."

As the higurashi c ry, Rena and Rina enter the dump in the twilight. Rena quickly bounds down the the slope of garbage; Rina follows more gingerly but compliments her. She asks if Rena comes there a lot, then adds, "with your friends, I assume?" Rena stops, turns, and, pleasantly, responds that she comes by herself. Rina notes that it is an interesting hobby for a teenage girl, then babbles about how much garbage has been dumped as she gingerly follows Rena. As the higurashi c ries increase, she asks Rena what sort of treasure they are seeking, but Rena does not answer.png.png. She repeats her question asking if Rena heard her.

Rena turns and, pleasantly, apologizes that she did not hear Rina: "Maybe the wind's blowing too hard."

There is no wind. Only the higurashi.

Rina does find this response odd, but before she can comment they arrive at Rena's abandoned van. Rena tells her not to reveal it to anyone that this is her secret hideout. Rina observes the bus and declares it "cute" and notes that Rena has a "secret base." Rena laughs in agreement, but adds that no one comes out there, and no one can hear what happens. Rina giggles in response and claims that she is honored that Rena brought her to such a place.

Reaching up to her neck, Rena laughs in response. s04e02 impressed rina.png] Rina asks her what, specifically, they were looking for. Rena ignores her question to declare that she worked really hard to bring all the correct tools stored there. She walks towards the van as she bubbles, "let me get them." As she opens the van, she stares ahead with a blank stare. For her part, Rina happily agrees that that makes sense. She asks if she can come into the van, but Rena pleasantly asks her to wait outside. Rina startles at this request, but she complies. Inside the van, Rena grabs a bag, then starts to pull out the rope and tape. She hears behind her Rina squeal how aweome it is. She turns in shock to see her inside. For her part, Rina seems legitimately impressed with Rena's "secret base": "You even have cushions!"

As she bubbles on about how Rena could even sleep there, Rena can only stare at her. She quietly replies that she thought she told her to wait outside. Still admiring the van, Rina explains that it started raining. With a pleasant smirk she suggests one cannot trust the weatherman.

Rena's left eye twitches.

Rina notices desk lamp on the front seat. She asks if it works. Rena affirms it does since they never shut of the electricity from the dam work. Mina "hmms" in satisfaction, places the lamp on the dashboard, turns it on, then settles in the seat, with her back to the Still Staring Rena. She calmly admits that she should have mentioned something earlier. Rena asks what that something is, and Rina opens her eyes, but does not turn back to Rena, and explains that she should know about herself and her father. She pleasantly explains, while staring ahead then looking a bit up, that while she earlier referred to him as a "friend," he is really her customer at a club where they drink. Her left eye still twitching, Rena responds that she knows, and her father always comes home "stinking of booze." A little embarrassed, Rina's eyes look back as she agrees that of course Rena would know since she is his daughter and lives with him.

Her eyes move back to the front as she sincerely reveals to Rena that she was also raised by a single parent. Thus, when she heard about Rena, she "just," but she then stops her thought, bows her head a bit, and continues to confess that while she knows she has no right to ask it of Rena – whose left eye still twitches in a flash as the scene then focuses on Rina from outside the van – but she feels really guilty about her father coming to the club. She asks Rena if she could say something to him and convince him to stop coming.

Rena's hands clutch into the back cushions as she crawls forward. The scene focuses on Rina from behind. Rina laughs at her request, but she then adds that she will help by staying away from her father. As Rena's hands approach Rina's neck from behind, Rina asks again if she can help. Rena's hands clasp Rina's shoulders. Rina turns her head and asks, "Reina-chan?" Rena replies that she understands what she is saying. Rina turns her head forward again and smiles as she responds, "good!" s04e02 mad rena.png Rena giggles as her fingers curl around Rina's throat. Rina says that she has a strong grip, but when Rena goes from giggling to laughing, Rina tries to suggest that she is kind of hurting her. Rena continues to giggle, and Rina realizes this is serious. She again states that Rena is hurting her as she reaches for Rena's fingers. Rena now yells that Rina may have fooled her father, but she has not fooled her. Rina struggles to tell her that she is wrong. Rena goes from giggling to laughing maniacally and insists that she is doing what is right. She continues to perseverate that she needs to work harder.

Rina struggles to no avail. She eventually reaches out to take the lamp and throw it back, striking Rena on the head. Rena lets go of her neck. Rina grabs her neck coughing, then turns back to see Rena who is holding her head and staring back at her malevolently. Her gaze then falls to Rena's right where, on the cushion, is a tarpaulin, saw, rope, tape, and the box of deodorizer. Rina is shocked; Rena reaches for her nata. She dramatically removes the covering and smiles as the blade is revealed. Rina screams, "no!" and flees from the van. She quickly stumbles and falls in the trash. Giggling maniacally, Rena staggers out of the van with her nata, and chases after Rina. Rina tries again to run, screaming for help, but she falls down the wall of trash to land in front of Rena.

She repeats, "I'm sorry (御免なさい・gomennasai)!" then "don't kill me." Rena raises her blade and brings it down.

Second Half

With the rain falling heavily, Rena's left hand drags Rina body by her left foot. She eventually brings her back to the van where she leave her on the tarpaulin. She sets the light on the seat and looks at Rina's body. She picks up her nata, falls to her knees, raises it, and begins to chop at Rina's body. She then reaches for the saw. The scene pulls back to reveal Satoko standing watching with an umbrella. Her eyes blaze as she says as if to Rena that if she can convince Rika to stay in Hinamizawa, she promises she will be happy in that perfect world. She then turns and walks away.

Rena collapses panting. Between breaths she states that she "has to. . . ." as the scene reveals a number of taped up packages on the the tarpaulin. She is then shown dragging the tarpaulin filled with these packages. She madly tells her father that, this time, she put in all of the effort. The tarpaulin sack catches on some trash, and Rena falls forward. She looks back at it. It is open, revealing the many packages that were once a hostess as at respectable establishment in Okinomiya. "I've got to hide her!" she gasps.

The paper calendar shows "Wednesday, June 15, 1983." s04e02 excited mion.png The Sun rises and the birds chirp and the scene focuses on the school. Inside, Mion excitedly declares that school is finally over. She continues, excitedly, to declare the Club game has started, then concludes by rhetorically asking Keiichi, Satoko, and Rika, who stand before her, if there are any objections. All three deny there are. Mion starts to continue but comes to a stop when she realizes the smiling Rena standing next to her did not answer.png.png. Rena clasps her hands in apology and confesses that she has things to do again today. Mion whines in protest; Rena reiterates her sorrow. As they babble, Keiichi stares ahead.

Rika then adds to Mion that she leaves all of the time to go to work as well. She sheepishly protests that she just cannot say "no" to her uncle. Rena gathers her satchel and promises that when she returns everything will be as it was. Mion pleasantly replies that whatever it is she has to do, they will be here waiting and are behind her. Keiichi watches her rush off, then he comments that he thinks he knows what she is up to. Satoko turns to him and ask him if he really does, but he merely responds with a "hmmmm."

With the higurashi c rying, the scene focuses on the late afternoon sky above the dump. Rena slides over a corrugated cover to reveal the wrapped parts of Rina. "Good, she's still here," she remarks with a pleasant smile. As she slides back the cover, she hears from behind her Keiichi call out to her asking if she is working up a sweat. Rena's eyes expand, and she then looks back in anger. She stands, recovers herself, and, pleasantly, asks why he is there. With a dramatic salute, Keiichi responds that he received notice of an emergency and rushed to the scene. He demands to see the one who needs help. Rena stammers her question on what emergency he means. He officiously explains as a question that he received a report about a Kenta-kun statue buried in a pile of trash. s0402 rena smitten.png Rena whines in protest that Keiichi scared her as she turns cute. Keiichi confesses it was a joke, then he reminds her that he promised to help her. She marvels that he came all the way there for her, then blushes the literal "beet red," and steam or clouds appear about her head. She clasps her blushing face with both hands while Keiichi makes his way to her. He asks her where Kenta-kun is located. Rena directs him some distance away. Keiichi asks her "down there," and Rena affirms this. s0402 rena malevolent stare™.png After he passes, she stares at him with a Malevolent Stare™.

For his part, Keiichi starts removing garbage. He sweats as he works.

Rena stands behind him silently.

He then complains that he wishes he had an axe or something. Rena tries to tell him it is fine, but determined, Keiichi insists that he is fine and she does want the statute. However, after removing some wood, he collapses and wonders if he can take a break. Appearing legitimately concerned, Rena offers to obtain some barley tea since her home is really close.

She runs off, panting, then stops and tells herself that he saw. She perseverates "he saw (見れた・mireta)" as she starts scratching at her neck. As she scratches and determines what to do, she appears more realistic. She asks herself what she should do. She finally stops, brightens, as the higurashi c ry, that she knows the answer.png.png: she just has to work harder. She rushes off to her van, unsheathes her nata, as the higurashi crescendo, and she adopts an expression that could merit use as the avatar for an episode.

The scene shifts to the magazines Keiichi found in the "Question Arc" – Arg! – which describe the murder and dismemberment of the Construction Manager. Keiichi picks it up and reads the title out loud. He pages through the magazine as he, excitedly, declares that he knew something happened.

Laced boots walk. The music is ominous. The scene focuses on approaching Keiichi from behind as he reads to himself out loud the details of the murder of said manager. Rena stands behind him, then slowly raises her nata. Keiichi cannot fail to see her shadow cast in front of him. He turns to see her with her blade raised.

A scream causes birds to flee nearby trees.

Rena falls backwards crying as she loses her weapon in surprise. Keiichi stares at her in surprise, recovers, and quickly tries to hide the magazine behind his vest as Rena apologizes and asks if she scared him. When he politely denies it, she recovers by claiming that he previously suggested they needed an axe. Keiichi apologizes for overreacting. He picks up her nata and observes it while she apologizes again. He then suggests that since it is pretty dark they should stop for the night. She agrees, and he promises to help her the next day. Blushing, she asks him if he really want to help her. When he insists he does, she blushes further, then pirouettes in excitement as the scene pulls back. She bubbles that she will bring Kenta-kun home. The scene focuses on her as she laughs and Keiichi smiles behind her.

The scene shifts to a convenience store. Inside, Mrs. Maebara notices Rena looking at a package of meat. Rena happily recognizes her as Keiichi's mother and bid her a goodnight. She asks if Rena is shopping for dinner. Rena replies that she is as well as for tomorrow's lunch. Keiichi's Mum compliments her for being such a good child, then she notes that Keiichi could not cook if his life depended upon it. With a wink, she suggests that if she ever stays out late for work, she might ask Rena to cook for him. Rena dutifully agrees. s0402 ōishi debut.png With a much less enthusiastic expression, Rena walks home. A car approaches from behind her. Ōishi Kuraudo pulls up, excuses himself, then asks if she is "Ryūgū-san? Reina Ryūgū-san?" She confirms this then asks who he is. He suggests that they continue their talk in his car and notes that the car has air conditioning. As he does, he pulls out his identification as a policeman. Rena stares.

The scene shifts to her sitting in his back seat. He genially asks her to tell her if the air conditioning blast is too cold since he likes to blast it. She merely asks him what he wants from her. He passes her a picture of Rina and asks if she knows her. She immediately identifies her as "Mamiya Rina-san." Ōishi warily responds that that is her club name, and her real name is "Mamiya Ritsuko-san." Rena asks him if something happened to her. He responds that she has been missing since the day before. She repeats, "yesterday," and he asks her if that rings any bells. She replies that she came to her house. He sighs and admits that he thought so since her coworkers informed him that she had gone to Hinamizawa to visit the daughter of one of her customers. He continues that they are trying to retrace her movements.

Rena insists that she does not know what happened after she visited. She claims that they talked for a bit and then Rina left. Ōishi asks if she will tell him what they talked about. She explains that Rina wanted to be her friend since they were both raised by single parents. Ōishi asks her if she remembers anything else to call the Okinomiya police. Rena agrees.

She leaves his car. He looks out his window and rhetorically asks her if it is almost time for the Watanagashi Festival. He then adds that he hopes they will get a reprieve this year. Rena startles, and Ōishi quickly adds that he means Oyashiro-sama's Curse. With a laugh, he bid her fairwell and drives off. With an Angry Look even More Angry Than Her Malevolent Stare™, Rena cluthes her grocery bag.

Post-End Titles

Adult-Voiced Rika returns to announce the title of the arc Oniakashi-hen and the next episode LINK.

Characters

Referbacks and Forwards

  • Doll: same doll that Keiichi often gives to her rather than Mion.
  • Rick Roll: in many arcs, Keiichi promises to never give up let down abandon Rena.
  • "I Can Change! I Can Change!": similar to other characters in , such as Takano and Teppei, Rina seems to have developed a change of heart.
  • "Love is in the Air!":
  • Rena has a similar reaction to Keiichi's attention as Mion does twice.
  • In this arc's "Question Arc" of Onidamashi-hen, Mion seems happy to let Rena develop a crush on Keiichi, and she even encourages it.
  • "Come On, Baby, Make it Hurt So Good!": Despite that, Rena was going to use her nata on Keiichi.
  • "Workin' Nine to Five!": In previous arcs, Mion usually works for one of her uncles at his game store. The previous season's reveals in one of Satoko's flashbacks that Mion also replaces her sister in her other uncle's Angel Mort.
  • "Welcome to 1983! We've Got Air Conditioning! And VHS! But Not Cellular Phones!": Ōishi frequently advertises the air conditioning in his car as an enticement to converse inside it. Up until this episode, this is a conversation he has with Keiichi.

Trivia

  • "Timeline Line Up": Although it is still not clear whether Oniakashi-hen takes place in the same fragment as Onidamashi-hen, it can be assumed that it is a retelling from Rena's perspective. In Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gō episode 1, the span of time between the last club activity (when Satoko gave Rena her "Medicine") and Keiichi's second visit to the dump was portrayed with brief moments during June 14th-15th. These moments show the beginning of rain; marking the moment Rena kills Rina.

Cultural References

  • "You Brought Me Fame and Fortune, I Fang You All!": this is a nice reference on "fangs" in manga and anime. One thing to add is that normally rendered serious characters often, when they become upset or frustrated, will be drawn more stylish and with fangs to demonstrate they are overwhelmed by their passions. What is interesting in this case is Rena is rendered much more realistic when she acquires her Incredible Incisors. As noted in the previous season, Satoko retains her "fangs" into her teenage years.

Memorable Moments

  • "No Good Turn Goes Unpunished": Rina is different. As discussed in her page, she has been self-centered to her own destruction. In their previous interactions, Rina tries to kill Rena when the girl appears to thwart her love-scam with Mr. Ryūgū. Her only objective in those instances is to use Rena to convince her father to marry her so she may drain as much money from him as she can. In this time fragment, Rina appears to legitimately feel shame that Rena will be hurt by her scheme, and she tries to get Rena to help her break off her relationship. It works out as well as most plans in Higurashi.
  • "Best Laid Plans of Mice and Satoko": regarding Satoko's promise to the sleeping Rena that she will eventually live a happy life in Hinamizawa, if she had not injected Rena, Rena may have heard what Rina was trying to tell her, and Rena would have had this happy life.
  • "Fangs for the Memories": usually it is Satoko who has the "fangs" that make her appear "primal." For the first time, Rena shows her "fangs," but they are realistically drawn.
  • Mommy Drinks because You Cry: of the many tragedies of Higurashi, Rena blames herself for the failure of her parents' marriage, as well as her father's subsequent failures. As shown in the "Question Arc" – Arg! – Rena believes her actions and sacrifice will save her father.

Quotes
