Eua sits on her couch in the Sea of Time Fragments staring ahead. Behind her, Hanyū floats down to the brick "floor." She declares that she has at last found her. Without looking back at her, Eua confesses to Hanyū that she did not think she would find her wavelength in the Sea of Fragments. She laughs; Hanyū stares ahead with a slight blush.

Eua continues that her learning that "Vier" had lost her memories spoiled her fun. Hanyū starts to stride toward Eua, but after her second step, her right foot appears to initiate light streaming from between the bricks which then envelopes her. Fragments start to circle her. She angrily demands to know what Eua is doing; Eua smiles and rhetorically asks if it is not obvious since they both have pieces on the board. She suggests that they enjoy watching the two destroy one another.

The scene focuses on one fragment which glows brightly. Hanyū startles, then the scene reveals the fragment contains the body of an Angel Mort waitress. The fragment shows scenes from the previous episode where Rika sits stunned but resigned at her table. Hanyū gasps at Rika's expression. She cries out her name. In the fragment, Rika's eyes glisten.

Eua laughs. Still looking ahead, she compliments the reaction then adds that a game needs its players. There is a flashes of scenes of Keiichi interacting with Rena from the previous episode which then transitions into the Opening Sequence.

A time fragment spins which show the aftermath of the previous episode with the sound of Keiichi's bat striking flesh. Rena lies face down in blood from her head wound next to the body of Satoko. Keiichi gasps a bit then turns toward the viewer. The scene focuses on a dejected and bloody Rika who asks "why?" in her Adult Voice. As Keiichi approaches her, she asks why it only happens to her. The scene focuses on her left eye with a tear flowing from it. The scene focuses on the bodies of a patron and a waitress as she asks what grave sin she committed to justify punishment for an eternity.

Keiichi stands over her as he digs into his throat. He insists that now is the time for her to reveal the secret cure to that will rid him of these parasites in her throat. Still in her Adult Voice, Rika starts to laugh. She looks up at him, her eyes briefly flash with a dramatic sound effect, and she then agrees to tell him that the cure is right here. He desperately demands that she give it to him immediately as he screams about the itching. Meanwhile, her right hand has her index and middle fingers extended. She curls her middle finger, then points to her head as she declares that the cure is in her head: "Split open my skull, eat my brains, and you'll be cured." She lowers her hand as he declares success and brings his bat down on her head.

Hanyū screams out her name. The fragment shows her bloody head. The scene then focuses on Hanyū who looks warily to her left and right. Two large fragments appear to contain part of this final scene. The scene then returns to Keiichi placing a tray of utensils on the table in front of Rika's body as he declares to the parasites that he just has to take the cure, only to start screaming about how his throat itches. He first picks up a spoon, then a fork, declaring the latter better. As he laughs as he approaches Rika's head with the fork, he is stopped by the sound of an explosion.

He turns to see numerous police in riot gear rushing him with shields. One slams him on to a table. He protests by stabbing the officer in the arm with the fork. Kicking him away, Keiichi insists that he just wants to get rid of "these bugs." The scene focuses on his mad face as he screams and scratched, then pulls away from the fragment which floats above Hanyū. She demands to know what is going on in that world; Eua ignores her and rises from her coach. She slowly turns to face her. Hanyū demands to know what she has done. Eua laughs and asks if she is not entertained. She then assures Hanyū not to fear since the real fun is about to begin. Surprised, Hanyū then turns to her right to face the viewer as a fragment floats by. In it, she sees Satoko sheepishly rise from the floor as the voice of Keiichi protesting with the police to let him go is heard. Satoko smiles slyly. Hanyū stammers her name. Satoko stretches with satisfaction. She looks behind her; Keiichi screams in vain as he is held down. Satoko sarcastically observes that it has become quite lively. She stands to reveal her gun tucked in her shorts. She walks over to Rika. "Poor Rika, all alone," she coos. As the scene pans over Rika's body, Satoko continues that there is no one to support her fragile heart anymore. She vows that in every world, in every fragment, she is Rika's only ally, as her eyes suddenly blaze.

The scene shifts back to the shocked Hanyū who can only say, "no." Back in the fragment, the blazing-eyed Satoko kneels before Rika and genially advises her to just give up: "The key to your happiness lies with me." She pulls out her gun, places it against her own forehead, and vows that she will make sure that Rika comes to this understanding. She pulls the trigger.

Hanyū watches. She fights to hold back her tears as she asks Eua what she has done. Eua merely smiles as Hanyū realizes that she granted power to Satoko. Eua reminds her, "Just as you did to Rika, yes?" Hanyū admits this but confesses that it was a mistake. She waves her hand, her own eyes blaze, and she declares that what Eua did is also a mistake. Eua's eyes narrow as she severely asks if Hanyū would dare to suggest that she acted in error. She strikes her staff on the floor. Lightning appears before her as she advises her "dear failure" to choose her words carefully. Hanyū holds up her hands creating an aura as she concedes that while she may be a failure, she still has some power. However, the lightning knocks her backwards against three wooden boards that form a structure similar to a cross. Eua closes her eyes with apparent impatience. She then points her staff at her, the head of which glows brightly. The light pins Hanyū's limbs against the boards. Eua declares that, long ago, Hanyū once deflected one of Takano's bullets to protect her friends. She sarcastically asks if she believe such an opportunity to randomly protect them would occur again.

Hanyū insists that the power was not random, and Eua could not understand that. Eua spats her contempt at Hanyū's insolence. A fragment floats between them and glow. Hanyū expresses shock. Over this, Eua confesses that while it pains her to admit that Hanyū is a part of her, she will allow her to enjoy the spectacle from a front-row seat. The fragment resolves to Rika sweating and gasping as she lies prone. The higurashi do what they d o. She opens her eyes to see Satoko. Satoko "comforts" her by noting that she has a fever and promises to stay with her, all the while smiling. Crying, Rika asks, in her Adult Voice, why this is happening to her. Satoko responds that she does not know what she was dreaming about, but then she adds that Rika must know that her dreams are important. When Rika reacts, Satoko continues that she is having her dreams for a very important purpose.

Rika demands to know the reason, particularly the reason that would justify her torture by these horrible and tragic realities.

Satoko does not react. She merely rhetorically asks that Rika does not know why she suffers from the terrible dreams night after night. Rika starts to ask her what she is saying, but her pain drives her to cry, "M-My body . . . everything hurts!" Satoko continues to rhetorically ask in measured tones as Rika writhes and screams, that the horrible dreams that torture her and she still does not know why. She responds to Rika's demand to know why by stating that she is cursed. Rika asks what she means as she screams in pain and wonders why she cannot move. Satoko gently asks if she means "this," as she removes the blanket to reveal that she has been disemboweled. Hanyū reacts in shock, then the scene returns to Rika screaming. Satoko tells her it is time, as she digs into her throat, for the Watanagashi Festival. For reasons utterly necessary for the plot, the scene focuses on Hanyū-chan 's front court as she struggles against her lightning restraint and screams at Satoko to stop.

Eua sarcastically asks her if she is not Oyashiro-sama. Her newest priestess is simply about to perform the offertory dance, and Hanyū should watch it. Back to Rika, who stares in fear at Satoko, she hears Satoko explain that Rika needs to accept the truth: her nightmare was not placed on her without cause. Rika begs Satoko to stop, but Satoko continues that Rika has "sinned," and this is her eternal punishment. She brings down the hoe, with very wet sound effects as the scene cuts to show the phone on a table, then to Rika screaming.

Hanyū struggles and begs Eua to make it stop. Unfazed, Eua asks her is she is making demands of her. She demands that Hanyū know her place, and then she commands that she will not avert her eyes. Her staff glows, and the lightning restraints similarly glow which cause Hanyū to react as if in pain. She is forced to look up, and the scene shifts to the heavily censored depiction of Satoko performing the Watanagashi upon Rika. Hanyū cries; Eua laughs in delight. She genially asks if she should let Hanyū move her mouth. She strikes her staff on the ground, and Hanyū screams Rika's name repeatedly. She then repeats "I'm sorry." Back to the view of the phone, the sound of a hoe striking viscera is heard. Rika face then appears as she reacts. With tears streaming from her eyes, Hanyū begs for it to stop. She insists that if it does not, Rika's mind will break. This merely elicits an evil laugh from Eua. Hanyū continues to struggle against her restraints as she begs Eua to stop it. She begs that she not make Satoko do this since Satoko is Rika's best friend. Eua continues to laugh as Satoko continues her work.

With a crescendo of Evil Laugh, Eua pauses to declare that Hanyū is so very entertaining. Hanyū can only beg her not to make Rika's best friend hurt her. Back to Rika, she struggles to apologize and say that she was wrong. Satoko reacts to this. She says Rika's name and embraces her heavily censored torso. Rika continues that if Satoko would go this far, but Satoko interrupts her to insist that all she want to do is live in Hinamizawa with her. Tears streaming from her eyes, Rika again apologizes. With tears streaming from her own eyes, Satoko replies that she is sure Rika's words of repentance will grant her Oyashiro-sama 's forgiveness. Rika slowly vows not to make that mistake again. She closes her eyes and the scene pulls back to show Satoko hugging her heavily-censored body. Satoko suggests that she burn those words onto her heart until she is certain that she will never forget them.

Devastated, Hanyū can only look up and tearfully say Rika's name.

The scene opens with the view of the sky with anime lens flare. There is a splay of water, and Mion's voice is heard. The scene reveals the Gang in bathing suits in the river. Satoko purposefully bumps Keiichi to cause him to misplay a ball tossed by Mion, as Rena, Rika, and Shion watch.

The higurashi d iscuss Michelangelo as the scene focuses on the late afternoon sky. Rena, Keiichi, Shion, and Mion all don their clothes. As Rena playfully flicks her fingers at Keiichi's ear, Satoko's voice states that they all have so much fun today. Next to her, Rika adjusts her had and agrees that she has so much fun she tired herself out. Satoko turns to her to ask her what she wanted to talk to her about. Rika replies that she is sure that Satoko has no idea what she is talking about, but she asks her to hear her out until the end. The scene switches to Hanyū who has ceased struggling against her lightning bonds. Her bangs cast a shadow over her eyes. She quietly tells Rika "don't." The scene switches back to Rika and Satoko. Rika explains that she has had to very long dreams. Smiling, she explains that one was very painful for her when she dreamed it. Looking back on it now, she realizes that it was full of shiny wonders.

Satoko stares at her without a reaction.

Rika continues that in the other dream she never noticed those shiny wonders. Rika lowers her head and states that the nightmare lasted a very long time. As she does, the scene shifts back to Hanyū with her own head bowed. She begs that Rika has to realize what is happening. Eua, watching, emits a giggle.

Tears stream from Rika's eyes as she happily, and rhetorically, asks why did she ever dream of anything else. This causes Satoko to react with her own tears. She says Rika's name, then starts to walk towards her. She places her hands on Rika's shoulders and confesses that she does not know what kind of dreams Rika has been having. Closing her eyes, she vows that no matter what happens, she will always be her friend. Opening them, she continues that that will be the same for Hinamizawa and everyone else: they will love her forever. Hanyū continues to try to will her voice to Rika. She insists that that world is wrong. Rika tearfully accepts an embrace from Satoko. Satoko comforts her by insisting that she is sure she will not have any more nightmares. Crying, Rika embraces Satoko, and the scene pulls back from the from above. Hanyū quietly insists that that world is not the one she chose, the world where she won her future.

As Rika cries, Satoko opens her eyes which blaze as she emits a smile. Hanyū insists that Rika has to see this. Eua calmly informs her that it is futile. She asks however could the "Cat" discover that Satoko is the cause of her suffering: "What reason does she have?"

Hanyū remains silent for a moment. With her bangs still obscuring her eyes, she raises her head slightly. As the scene focuses on her mouth, she silently mouths words.

The scene shifts to the home Rika shares with Satoko on the grounds of the Furude Shrine. Birds sing. Inside, a hand removes the paper on the calendar to reveal "Wednesday, June 15, 1983." It is Rika who stares blankly at the date. The scene shifts to the school, where a stunned Keiichi's voice is heard asking if she really yelled at him. Inside, he stands next to Mion facing Rena, with Satoko and Rika standing between them against the back of the classroom. Rena cheerfully explains that she certainly did since he keeps coming home drunk every night. Mion giggles and suspect that she gave him a stern lecture. Keiichi wonders how she could yell at her father. Satoko interrupts him to formally begs his forgiveness for her rudeness, then explains that some familiar problems demand harsh responses. Rena happily continues that she talked to his friend, "Rina-san," who agreed to help. Keiichi compliments her on the work she performed which Rena acknowledges with a head nod and "Un."

Rika stares at her with some concern.

The paper calendar reads, "Sunday, June 19, 1983." With somber music, dressed as a miko, Rika watches Jiro lead a repentant Takano away from the river.

The paper calendar reads, "Monday, June 20, 1983." Various uniformed men load up white vans with large boxes from the Irie Clinic. The paper calendar reads, "Wednesday, June 22, 1983." Jiro chats with Rika outside of the school. He turns and waves goodbye to her. Rika looks sad, but recalls Satoko cheerfully suggesting that perhaps she has not realized the true nature of happiness. They stand together as Satoko explains that one remembers the painful memories but not the happy ones. She cautions that Rika forgets the happy moments and strives for ones she cannot have. She reminds Rika that she is happy, so what more can she possibly want?

Rika lowers her head a bit. Satoko's left hand moves towards Rika's right hand. They touch. As Satoko asks her to never leave them, their hands clasp. With a smile, Rika turns to look at Satoko as she promises that she will stay forever. The scene pulls back to reveal that they are standing on the observatory of the Furude Shrine. "With my best friend, Satoko," Rika concludes. There is a flash of Ōishi pushing her, in her miko robes, to the ground under the influence of the Hinamizawa Syndrome. He raises Satoshi's bat and lowers it with an audibly wet thud. There is a flash, and Rika awakens in shock. She sits up in her futon while Satoko sleeps next to her. She wonders why she is having such dreams. She smiles at the sleeping Satoko, stands, then covers her with her blanket. She stands, and the paper calendar behind her reveals that it is the night of June 22. She walks towards it and removes the paper to reveal "Thursday, June 23, 1983." She asks herself is not tomorrow. . ..

The scene shifts to the outside of the Sonozaki Twins' uncle's store Da Vinci (ダビンチ). Rika walks down an aisle inside. She looks up at a stuffed bear and takes it with a slight smile. She hears Satoko insist that they should head home. Satoko is outside the store on her bike. Rika cutely tells her to wait a second as she moves toward the register.

The paper calendar reads, "Friday, June 24, 1983."

On the school grounds, Keiichi waves his hand warning, "Here it comes!" He hurls a volley ball between Rena and Satoko. After a few bounces, Mion retrieves it and hurls it back with a warning. Meanwhile, in the classroom, Rika sats a yellow box next to the stuffed bear on the shelf over the shoe lockers. She stares at both with a smile, then she experiences a flashback to the night of the Watanagashi Festival where Ōishi attacks her. Satoko slowly approaches as Rena begs her to stay away. A gun fires and Ōishi falls after having been shot through his head. Satoko continues to approach. The flashback ends with Rika shaken and clutching herself. She cries to herself, asking in her Adult Voice, why she is experiencing those memories.

Party crackes go off to shower Satoko with streamers and confetti. She stands in the classroom with the rest having formed a semi-circle around her. She seems surprised, but Rika wishes her a happy birthday. Satoko remains confused; Keichi and Rena add their congratulations. Rena insists to the confused Satoko that Rika put the celebration together. She hands her a small unfolded piece of paper which reads in Rika's handwriting the instructions to get Satoko a great present for her birthday. Satoko looks up and sees Mion, Rena, and Keiichi holding gifts. In her formal fashion, she confesses her gratitude but then trails off.

Rika approaches her and tells her she knows that this day is very hard for her. Satoko sighs and says, "Nii-Nii." Rika insists that she still wanted everyone to celebrate with her. Looking down, Satoko continues in her formal way to apologize for acting so presumptuously. After a pause, she brightens as she raises her head and declares that with a birthday spent celebrated with friends, why would she not be happy.

Keiichi gives her his gift: an encyclopedia of vegetables. Rena gives her an egg character with a scholar's mortarboard, then hugs her eagerly as she enters her Cute Mode. Mion presents her with tickets to Angel Mort. Satoko thanks her. Rika interrupts to declare that she has another present for her. Rika opens one of the larger cabinets next to the shoe lockers. She apologizes that it is the most she could afford, but she hopes Satoko likes it. Satoko reacts eagerly. As Kawai Sensei 's music turns somber, and the camera skips to create double images, Rika slowly pulls out the yellow box. Satoko's left pupil constricts as she narrows her eyes, then she ducks covering her head.

Rika stands with surprise. The rest also look at the crouching Satoko with similar surprise. Rena asks, "Satoko-chan?" Rika stares at her, with surprise, then she has a flashback of Ōishi being shot in his head. He falls to reveal Satoko pointing her gun at him. Behind her stands [the surprised – Ed.] Rena. The flashback resolves to the present. Still in her Child's Voice, the surprised shocked Rika asks her how she knew. Realizing her mistake, Satoko stands, emits her Patented Laugh, and tries to blow off her mistake by declaring that a trap mistress like her can spot such a trap. Rena calmly turns and walks towards the desks. She places it on one. Satoko watches her with, well, surprise. Rika lifts the box to reveal the stuffed bear sitting on the bottom. This truly shocks Satoko. Still in her Child Voice, but without turning towards Satoko, Rika explains that until the previous night, it was the trap as she thought.

"But not anymore," Rika continues as there is a flashback to Satoko continuing to walk forward. She asks if Rika is quite dead. Back to the present time, but now in her Adult Voice, Rika states that she will ask her again as she turns to face her: "How did you know."

The suprised shocked confused rest turn with her. The scene shifts to Hanyu still tied to the cross declaring that there is power that will lead Rika to the truth. Eua stares at her with an expression of contempt. The scene focuses on Hanyu's mouth as she says, "a miracle."

Back t the present, Satoko looks warily, then turns to face Rika with her eyes blazing. This, well, shocks Rika. Satoko raises her pistol with a smile. The rest stand, well, shocked, and the scene cuts to the End Titles.
