Prologue

There is an arial view at night that settles over the forest. A hand reaches up turn on a flashlight that hangs from a branch. A shovel cuts into the dirt as a girl pants. The scene quickly cuts to the paper calendar which reads "Wednesday, June 15, 1983." It then cuts back to the shovel filled with dirt. Moths dance about the hanging flashlight. The sound of the panting girl shoveling continues in the background. Sacks containing Rina's body parts are kicked into the dug hole. Rena's face appears peering into the whole, then the scene shifts to show the whole containing Rina's wrapped parts. She begins to cover them with dirt.

She suddenly startles and turns to look behind her in fear. Some of the bushes appear to move with the wind. Moths and other bugs gather on the flashlight. Rena stares in the direction of the bushes as she pants. The scene focuses on her frightened face as the scene cuts to the Opening Titles.

First Half

The paper calendar reads "Thursday, June 16, 1983." s0403 delicious thighs.png The shows the school with the scream of a petrified Rena heard. The scene focuses on the grounds. Dressed in their gym clothes, Rena whines as she flees Mion and Satoko pursuing her in "Zombie Tag." She whines about why they want to kill her; they retort with a discussion regarding the relative tastiness of her thighs that When They C ry Wiki insists contains no subtext.

As she runs, Rena continues her whine of protest. She turns the corner of the school and takes a breather. She looks and sees Rika standing at the other corner with her back turned to her. She calls out to "Rika-chan." Rika turns to look at her. Meanwhile, up on the roof, a hiding Keiichi looks down.

Panting in front of Rika, Rena asks her if she is still safe. Rika happily replies that she is doing her best. Sweating, Rena whines that Mion and Satoko were chasing her. Rika closes her eyes and smiles cutely as she tell Rena not to worry. Rena collapses on the ground with a sigh of relief. She then reacts with surprise and tries to scurry away as she asks "Rika-chan" what she is doing. The approaching Rika assure her that she will be gentle when she eats her. When They C ry Wiki again insists this contains no subtext. Rena continues to whine as Rika approaches. She finally screams for Keiichi to help her. Standing on the roof, Keiichi recoils.

The scene shifts to a view of the sky. Now in his school clothes, Keiichi catches his breath as he leans out of the window of the changing area. He notices Rena walking into the school from some distance. Now dressed in her school cloths, Rena enters the hallway and notices and hears Keiichi as he washes his hands at a hallway sink. He grouses to himself that he never believed Rena would have the guts to get someone killed. Rena gasps in shock, then turns angry. Keiichi finishes washing his face, looks up, and curses Mion. He then sees Rena in the reflection of the mirror behind him staring darkly. He turns quickly to find her smiling at a him not darkly pleasantly. She smiles more cutely and offers him a handkerchief. He thanks her, but when he wipe his face she stares at him darkly with wide eyes.

The scene quick cuts to a shovel striking the ground. Rena furiously digs a hole in another location as she perseverates that she must work harder. The wrapped pieces of Rina lay on the grass nearby. She continues to perseverate as she drops them into the hole with her illuminated by the flashlight hung above her which is surrounded by moths.

The paper calendar reads, "Friday, June 17, 1983."

The school is viewed from above. Mion's excited voice declares that this year they have big plans. Inside the classroom she explains to Rena and Keiichi that it involves the "Watanagashi Four Demon Battle-Royale." Keiichi playfully asks what sort of name that is. Rika, standing next to Satoko, adds that she expected it to be the "Five Demon Battle-Royale" now that Keiichi is with them. Satoko emits her first Official Patented Laugh of the season, then encourages Keiich that he nows has the chance to show everything they have taught him. Rika cutely explains the details: they will go from stall to stall playing the games. Keiichi scoffs by punching his fist into his hand and rhetorically asking if that is all. As he boasts, the scene focuses on Rena's face. She stares at Keiichi.

The shovel digs into the dirt. Now at the edge of a cliff, Rena reinters Rina. Moths and bugs cling to her flashlight. She looks down with a look of dispair. She then laughs and starts covering the packages as she proclaims that now everything will be fine. She rationalizes that no one, not even the police, know where she is.

She has a flashback off quickly trying to replace the corrugated cover as Keiichi calls out to her. The scene returns to her staring. She looks at the shovel that still has dirt in it. Resumes covering Rina as she quietly remarks that she tried so hard, but it is still not enough. She wonders if she and her family are being punished for breaking the rule against leaving Hinamizawa. She drops her shovel, falls to her knees, and begs Oyashiro-sama to tell her how long this curse will last. With tears in her eyes, but with a deranged expression, she begs Oyashiro-sama to tell her.

The paper calendar reads, "Sunday, June 19, 1983." s0403 stamp.png The scene opens at the Furude Shrine, then shows a view of the crowd of happy villagers wandering about the stalls. Jirō takes a picture and remarks that the "kids" appear to be having a good time. Satoko returns his greeting but then admonishes him for taking the picture of a lady without her permission. Keiichi agrees, but then asks why, then, Jirō would have to ask her permission which results in her stamping on his foot. s0403 rika hoe.png With a flash, there is a transition to his hand grasping Rena's, with the night sky as a background which become bright with a loud audible sound of the clasp. The scene immediately moves to Keiichi waking with determination through the stalls, It then show a surprised but blushing Rena being led by him. With a view of the stacks of old mattresses, Rika's dance commences. The quick cuts to black when Rika delivers a might blow to the sacrificial victim old mattresses with her sacred disembowelizer hoe towards the viewer.

The scene returns to a view of cotton balls floating on the river then focuses on Keiichi and Rena sitting on the rocks on the banks together. Each holds a cotton ball. Keiichi asks her who is Oyashiro-sama. She replies that he is the deity that protects Hinamizawa. She, happily, insists that this is why it is important to pay respect to the deity. She touches the ball to her forehead and repeats, "thank you, Oyashiro-sama (オヤシロ様ありがとう・Oyashiro-sama arigatō)!" He watches her, then repeats, "Oyashiro-sama," while she repeats her thanks.

The scene shifts to a view of the river from above with numerous cotton balls floating on them. One of them falls loses its ball shape and sinks to the bottom.

Walking along the bank alone, Keiichi mutters the question how long it took for her to find everyone. Standing in the trees off the bank, Rena watches him. She asks herself if he saw or did not see. As she repeats this question, she tears at her throat.

The paper calendar reads "Monday, June 20, 1983." s0403 happy satoko.png The scene focuses on the sign for toilets in the school. Keiichi walks out. He is greeted by Chie. When he asks her what she wants, she answer.png.pngs that there is a visitor for him at the entrance. The scene shifts to Rena looking out the window of the school staircase. She slowly says as she watches Keiichi walk with Ōishi towards the detective's car, "I know that man walking with Keiich-kun." She has a flashback of him showing her his identification. As the two enter his car, she asks why Keiichi is talking to a policeman. She begins to repeat "why?" until she is accosted by a Happy Satoko running down the stairs above her declaring that she finally found her. She then makes a dramatic gesture of searching when she declares she cannot find Keiichi.

Rena does not turn from the window nor acknowledge Happy Satoko. s04e03 psychotic satoko.png Satoko then, dramatically, points as she announces the game is guessing the murderer. Rena slowly turns, with her left hand on her neck, as she forms a "happy face" and insists that she will be right their. Satoko approaches her inspecting her neck and asks what is wrong with it. Rena slowly removes her hands to reveal the three red welts from her fingers as she sheepishly explains that she does not know why, but her neck has been itchy recently. As she turns away, Satoko takes on an expression that When They C ry Wiki would not so much apply the adjective "happy" rather than "psychotic." She lets this expression pass into calm sympathy as she coos that Rena must take care of herself. Rena looks out of the window again as she thanks her. The scene switches to her perspective.

Her view of Ōishi's car shakes.

Second Half

The scene opens with a pan over Hinamizawa in the late afternoon as the higurashi c ry. It focuses on the road between the rice paddies where Keiichi walks with Rena. It then focuses on Keiichi's feet. He stops walking suddenly, and Rena quickly stops as well. Keiichi stares ahead and rhetorically asks if Rena and the rest of them are not lying or hiding things from him. She assures them that they are not. He suggests that is not true, and when she whines a protest, he, dramatically, turns on her and accuses her and the rest of hiding things from him. s04e03 rena lower face.png With a realistic view of her mouth, she severely responds, "Okay, Keiichi-kun." She, rhetorically, asks if he is lying or hiding anything from "Rena." He startles, but she repeats her rhetorical question. With some halting, and higurashi, he replies that he is not lying to or hiding anything from her. Rena quickly, but quietly, responds with her first official "usoda (嘘だ・you're lying) of the new season. Sweating, he asks why she thinks he is lying. She quickly recalls, with a flashback, that he hid something from her at the dump. Before he can protest, she continues that he really did not go to the teacher's office, he talked to "that old man" in his car. She ignores her protests and asks who the "old man" was. Stammering and sweating, he replies the does not know. Focusing on her lower face, she asks what they talked about. Keiichi insists that it had nothing to do with the rest of them which elicits Rena screaming "嘘だ!" s04e03 rena listens.png The scene cuts with her scream to a stunned Keiichi laying in his bed. His father calls out to him to inform him he has a phone call from the bookstore. Surprised, he repeats the word "bookstore." His father then greets Rena at their front door. She returns the greeting. He invites her in and directs her to Keiichi's room which is upstairs. As she starts to ascend the stairs, he suggests that he should bring snacks (お菓子・okashi) which sends Rena into Cute Mode. However, when he turns away to fetch him, her Cute Mode disappears, and she turns serious as she ascends. In the dark hallways, she approaches his door which is slid open a crack. As she reaches for the handle, she hears him excitedly demanding Ōishi tell him. Shocked, she peers in. She sees Keiichi sitting on the floor with the phone. He says he knew she had only just moved here. Through the crack, her eye narrows, and she quietly gasps. With surprise, Keiichi exclaims, "It was Rena (レナが・Rena ga)?!" The light from the room forms a bright vertical band on her shocked face. She slides the door closed.

The scene cuts to the outside of the Maebara home with Rena running from it. Incensed, she growls that Keiichi was on the phone with the detective and talking about her. The scene focuses on her hands which are curled as if she is clutching something. They relax, and her face relaxes in to an expression of resignation. She says, "Don't worry, dad." She turns to look at Keiichi's lit window as she clutches her neck. She tells herself she must work harder. She scratches audibly hard as the scene cuts to the modern and sophisticated cutting-edge digital clock which reveals it is 6:01 P.M., Thursday, June 23, 1983. It flips to 6:02 P.M.

The scene then cuts to the outside of Rena's home. Her traditional "I'm home," is heard. In his room, her father stirs. He replies with the traditional answer.png.png. She asks him if he had lunch. With a focus on his rumpled clothes on the floor, he claims he was not hungry. She asks him if he is okay as the scene focuses on empty sake and other liquor bottles. As the higurashi c ry, he ignores her question and laments that he cannot find Rina. She has not shown up for work. Maintaining a pleasant expression, Rena hopes that there is nothing to worry about her. s04e03 do not worry.png The phone interrupts their conversation. She tells him to relax since she will take care of it. He dutifully returns to his nap. On the phone, Keiichi's mother requests a favor. She and her husband had to leave for work and will not be back until the following morning. Keiichi is alone. While Aiko apologizes for her sudden request, Rena smiles and assures her she will prepare dinner for Keiichi. Aiko profusely thanks her; Rena stares ahead with a malevolent grin. s04e03 bad parenting.png Rena quickly packs her murder kit and leaves. Hearing her leave, her father looks up from his magazine with a picture of a girl in a bikini to ask if Rena is leaving. When They C ry Wiki insists that the nearby tissue box with a few balled up tissues nearby merely means Mr. Ryūgū has a cold or allergies. . . probably. At his door, Rena pleasantly explains that dinner may be a bit late tonight. He assures her that it is fine then tells her to take care of herself. She smiles an "um!" in agreement, then the scene focuses on her mouth as she vows, "I'm gonna go work really hard."

The scene cuts to a view of the full moon. Then to Rena walking down the neighborhood road. She has a blank expression. The Maebara home is dark. Rena stands at the doorway ringing the doorbell. She then turns and pounds on the door hard and loudly. She tries that door handle with her left hand, but she finds it locked. She repeatedly tries it as she yells for Keiichi to let him in. Inside, Keiichi stammers the question, "R-Rena?" Still with a blank expression but her pleasant voice, Rena explains that his mother called him to bring him dinner. Keiichi stammers back that that is news to him. She slaps at the door with her open hand as she insists she made a lot so they could eat dinner together. She begs him to open up and asks why he is being mean. The scene shows a view of the far side of the dark home. Rika peeks from around the corner to observe Rena. s4e03 cute rika.png In a flashback, she talks to Keiichi outside of the school. She, pleasantly, asks him if he is afraid of Rena. He admits it is a bit weird, that she is his friend and he cares for her, but sometimes when she looks at him, her eyes are creepy. With a focus on her mouth, Rika, still in her Child Voice, interrupts with a sharp "嘘だ!" She explains to the surprised Keiichi that if she said that, it should have been a one-time occurrence. She cutely suggests that maybe he was tired or simply overreacting. She suggests that when she feels afraid of Rena, he should not doubt her but himself. s04e03 keiichi hugs rena.png Back in the present, Keiichi cowers sweating. He then relaxes and stands. He addresses himself then walks to the door and undos the latches. Rika watches with surprise Keiichi stand outside talking to Rena. He smiles at her, walks up to her, and gives her a hug. Blushing and comically shocked, Rena asks if he is that hungry. s04e03 rena happy ending.png Rika relaxes and smiles. Keiichi holds the door open for Rena as the music turns pleasant. Rika moves closer to the entrance after the door closes behind Keiichi. She happily declares that everything should be fine. This being Higurashi, the scene immediately cuts to a close up of Rena's maniacal laughing face as blood sprays up on it with each blow of her knife. The scene cuts back to Rika smiling with her eyes closed and her hands clasped to her chest. She says that she knows Keiichi can win. This, again, being Higurashi, the scene immediately cuts to Keiichi striking Rena in the head with the extremely sophisticated and modern time and date diplay machine. It also plays music! She continues stabbing as he continues striking her on the head with the sophisticated an ["Clock Radio." – Ed.] The scene cuts back to Rika excitedly encouraging Keiichi. The scene returns to Rena and Keiichi's struggle with Beyond the Human Blood Volume Amounts of Blood™ being blasted around the living room.

Rika smiles with a satified giggle and turns to walk away. The scene follows her departure from above, then focuses on the inside where Rena and Keiichi lie in a pool of blood Beyond the Human Blood Volume™.

The paper calendar reads, "Friday, June 24, 1983."

With the view of the outside of the school, the Principal is heard ringing the bell from inside. Satoko walks into class with Rika. Rika is smilling, and Satoko delivers her hearty greeting. Mion sits at her desk, staring forward and down at the floor. Without looking at them, she quietly returns Satoko's greeting. The other kids in class are heard muttering. Concerned, Rika and Satoko approach Mion. Rika emits a concerned "good morning." She then turns in shock, emits a "Mi!" and asks where Keiich and Rena are. s04e03 rika learns.png Chie enters and asks, though it is a bit early, if everyone can take their seats. She lowers her head and states that she has an important announcement. As Satoko sits wondering what it could be, Rika sits with a shocked expression. In her Adult Voice Rika repeats "this can't be happening." Satoko looks at her as Chie politely asks all of them to listen. Mion stiffles a cry, and Chie explains that both were found injured and unconscious. The scene pans from behind her to reveal the rest of the students as she reveals that Keiichi is still in the hospital, but, unfortunately, "Ryūgū-san. . . ."

Rika interrupts her with a "嘘だ!" The scene focuses on her face. Chie looks back at her gently. Mion tries to console her that she knows. She then looks down and reveals that when the police called her to tell her what happened, she could not believe it either. Satoko's voice is heard asking "Rika?" The scene depicts the classroom from above with Rika walking out. Chie asks her to please sit down since she is not finished with her announcement. Rika reaches for the door handle and turns to reply in her Adult Voice: "You're not done? Well, I'm done." She is heard leaving as Chie stares back in concerned surprise. Rika walks down the corridor as Satoko's voice assures Chie that she will check on Rika later. With her face in her hand, Chie thanks Satoko who stares at the departing Rika with an Evil Smile.™

The scene shifts to a view of the Maebara home from above. Rika stands at the driveway which is blocked by police tape. There are a number of police vehicles with uniformed officers standing on the property. She stares stunned. Another cut reveals the entrance to the Furude Shrine as the higurashi c ry. Rika slowly ascends the stone steps. The scene reveals the home she shares with Satoko. Her hand reaches into a cabinet to remove a knife. She stares at it sadly, stiffens, and drives it into her neck. She removes it to release an arterial spray. She stabs again and releases an amount of blood that exceeds the Human Blood Volume.™ As she stares into her expression in the growing pool of her blood, that exceeds the Human et cetera, she raises the blade again. The resulting spray from her already exsanginated body hits the ceiling light. More blows blast the inside of the windows, the blast into the sitting room. From outside, her frustrated screams are heard with each blow that sprays the inside of the kitchen window as the higurashi c rescendo.

The scene cuts to the outside of the house later in the day. Satoko's voice is heard giving the traditional "I'm home" greeting to Rika. Inside, with blood Beyond the Human et cetera having covered the wall next to her, Satoko gently addresses Rika. Satoko wades steps though the pool of blood and places her head against Rika's chest to listen for a heart beat. She declared her quite dead, then continues her lecture that she knows that if she dies before Rika does, she cannot chase after her. She picks up the knife, stands, and continues her lecture. She is sure that Rika thinks everything that happened was the result of bad luck, and she can escape the tragedy in the next fragment. With a view looking up at her holding the knife to her throat, Satoko severely mocks her hope. She declares that until she gives up she will never, never, never – her eyes suddenly blaze red – escape Oyashiro-sama 's curse.

There is a flash of her finger snap.

With both hands, she draws the knife across her neck releasing the similar Beyond the Human yadda yadda. She falls and the scene cuts to the end titles.

Post-End Titles

Referbacks and Forwards

  • "'Answers?!' You Want Answers?!":
  • Rena's Mistrust of Keiichi : Rena misunderstood Keiichi's complaining about how she played zombie tag to apply to her murder of Rina. She then misinterpreted Keiichi's interest in and then fear of Oyashiro-sama 's Curse to be a result of him witnessing her murder.
  • Rena's Behavior : in the "base" arc Onikakushi-hen, while Rena appears to act strange, this is through the viewpoint of Keiichi who is suffering from the Hinamizawa Syndrome.
  • Zombie Tag
  • Leaving Hinamizawa: explanation here
  • "Walking in Your Footsteps": the scene focuses on Keiichi's feet as he takes a step and stops. Another step is heard. While this is Rena coming to a stop next to him, it is a homage to characters hearing an extra footstep behind them when they stop walking. Does When They C ry Wiki even have to "Arg! Spoiler that be! Arg!" this one?

Trivia

  • "Yeah! Yeah! Dude Deity Looks Like a Lady!": Rena literally says that Oyashiro-sama is the deity/god (神様・kami-sama) that protects Hinamizawa. This is understandable since traditions in Hinamizawa depict the deity as male. While one can find a specific term for "goddess (女神・megami)," which combines the kanji for "woman" with "deity/god," "kami-sama" is used for goddesses as well. Indeed, when one character confronts the deity, she uses the term "kami-sama" – Auu~ Auu~ Arg!

Memorable Moments

  • "Bring Out Your Dead!": Rena learning how difficult it is to dispose of a body permanently. She should ask Brick Top about it. . ..
  • "What . . . We've Got Here is . . . FAILURE . . . to . . . Communicate!": how Rena misunderstands Keiichi's grousing about her playing Zombie Tag. Granted, she is under the influence of Hinamizawa Syndrome. Similarly, Keiichi has no idea why she behaves the way she does.
  • Keiichi X Rena: this is the first depicted time Keiichi hugs Rena. Humor aside, Keiichi only does this as an apology and friendship as he did to the equally shocked Mion depicted in Invasion of Earth of Tsumihoroboshi-hen as well as in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku.
  • "Wake Up! Time to Die!": if Satoko dies before Rika she cannot chase the same Rika. When They C ry Wiki is certain that this is just a minor point that foreshadows nothing, goodness no!
