Arg! There be! Arg!

Isshiki (一色 ) is a member of and spokesman for the Polaris cult and the father of Kururu, a main character of the chapters of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei. He is also the leader of the offensive wing of the cult, Ring of Stars, where he is known by other members as "Canopus."

Currently, his first name is unknown. In both Oniokoshi-hen and Hoshiwatashi-hen, he acts as the spokesman for the cult Polaris which has moved into Hinamizawa. Since the cult refuses to interact, or even acknowledge a greeting from, villagers, severe stress has developed between it and them. In both chapters, there are incidents of anti-Hinamizawa and Polaris graffiti which both sides blame the other for. Isshiki usually comes into conflict with Kimiyoshi Kazuho, a prominent businessman and son of the current mayor. Since the population of Hinamizawa has significantly dropped, the introduction of Polaris essentially doubles it. Isshiki uses this fact, and the villagers desire that Hinamizawa become a World Heritage Site, to push back against pressures from the Kimiyoshi.

He is also, with the name "Canopus," the leader of the offensive wing of the cult: Ring of Stars. All members have names taken from stars. In both chapters, his daughter acts as a very open and uninhibited girl towards the new "Gang" of children: Keitarō, Kihiro, Tamaki, and Sakiko under the excuse that she really does not believe in the cult. Nevertheless, in both it is revealed that she is working directly for her father. The two chapters have different fates for him:

Isshiki has his daughter learn as much as she can about the Gang. This includes her joining the Club and even the Watanagashi Festival. However, she legitimately believes in Polaris and undergoes purification. On the night of Watanagashi, Isshiki, Kururu, her friend Inori, and other members of the Ring of Stars invade the Maebara home and murder Keitaro's grandfather and grandmother. They then set fire to his house, immolating him and themselves.

His daughter similarly strives to learn as much as she can about the Gang. In this chapter, Keitarō accepts the invitation to attend Polaris' festival which takes place on the same night as Watanagashi. On that night, Kazuho disappears. This, along with a condition that appears similar to the Hinamizawa Syndrome, drives his daughter and villagers to confront him at the Polaris compound. They break in and begin slaughtering Polaris members. Isshiki confronts two inside a home, pours gasoline over himself, and ignites it to kill himself and the intruders.

Isshiki always appears impeccably dressed in a suit. The collar of his shirt is often adorned with the stars of the Big Dipper which includes Polaris. He wears glasses which he frequently adjusts. In the compound, whilst other members tend to don clothes suggestive of the Amish, he continues to wear suits.

He appears cold and serious. This includes an unwillingness to take the bait from villagers and the Kimiyoshi. He therefore appears ever in control. He willingly sacrifices his daughter to essentially defile herself by associating with the Gang in order to further his plans. His loyalty to Polaris appears sincere in that he sacrifices his daughter and himself to them.

Part of the tenet of Polaris is the everyone is a father and mother to the children. Thus, she will call him "father," then correct herself to address him as "Comrade Canopus." Their relationship in Oni okushi-hen appears that of superior to underling. However, when joins him in the murder of the Maebara, he perhaps proudly accepts her as a member of the Ring of Stars prior to their immolation. She similarly serves him in Hoshi watashi-hen. Since the final chapter has not been publishes as of the creation of this page, he allows her to bring Keitarō to Polaris' festival.
