Maebara Keitarõ (前原 圭太郎) is the son of Maebara Keiichi and one of the main characters of chapters of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Rei.

In both chapters, Keitarō was born in Hinamizawa, but his family moved to Tōkyō roughly five years prior to events that start in 2019. This being Hinamizawa, both chapters open with a suggestion of blood and violence – Arg!

With the closing of the Hinamizawa Branch School, he attends a middle school with the rest of his friends in Okinomiya. Very outgoing and aggressive at making friends based on the advice of his father, he tries every day to make new friends at school and even recruit new members to the Club. However, he notices some student refuse to speak to or even acknowledge him. When one girl falls down a stairs, he call to her apparent friends to help her, but they run away. He insists on carrying her to the nurse and, despite her help, she refuses to talk to him.

Keitarō learns that these students and their parents are part of a cult known as Polaris which appears to promise to be a refuge for sufferers of domestic violence. As such, the group lives in their own compound. Keitarō also learns that the population of Hinamizawa shrank significantly, and the influx of Polaris members makes them roughly half the population. The villagers generally do not like them, because Polaris members will not even acknowledge a greeting. There appear to be cases of Polaris members dumping garbage in the wrong places while insulting graffiti has appeared directed towards Polaris.

Nevertheless, Keitarō finds some attraction to, perhaps even develops a crush on, the girl. He is accosted by one of her friends who is far more outgoing. He decides to try to form friendships between his friends and these girls as a way of reconciling both populations of Hinamizawa.

Keiitarō certainly resembles his father down to his blue eyes. He also occasionally wears a vest similar to the one Keiichi wore outside of school.

Keitarō credits his desire to make friends from the advice his father gave him when he was very young: that the power of friendship can defeat fate. As such, he is very outgoing and friendly. He jokes that he will make friends with everyone in the world as his path to world domination. When rebuffed or thwarted, he tries again. There is, thus far, no suggestion that he has his father's rhetorical skills, though When They C ry Wiki must concede that for much of Higurashi, his father did not always succeed despite his reputation.

As the two boys, they appear close friends. Kihiro takes after his mother by waiting for Keitarō for school. He particularly recognizes when others are lying, uttering forth the "嘘だ!" that made his mother famous. In a flash-back, Keitarō recalls both as very young children earning Rena's wrath when they try to hide that they decapitated and amputated a foot from "Kenta-Kun." Keitarō appears to enjoy playing pranks on and teasing Kihiro. He explains in Hoshiwatashi-hen that he enjoys Kihiro's reactions to being teased and pranked. While Kihiro does not appear to retaliate with his own pranks, he will stand up to Keitarō if he does not agree with his decisions. Obviously Kihiro takes a similar role as his mother did with Keitarō's father; however, unless When They C ry Wiki missed it, he shows no romantic interest in Keitarō as his mother did for Keiichi.

Sakiko is proudly a year older than Keitarō and the rest given her boasts; however, they all attend the same class in middle school. While she does not make traps like her mother, she does play pranks. The do not have the same relationship their parents had, but Keitarō might agree that she can be a bit of a brat. For her part, Sakiko does not appear to target him primarily for her pranks and jokes. She particularly enjoys teasing Tamaki over her obsession with getting married and having children.

As the heir to the Sonozaki family, Tamaki appears particularly concerned with finding a future husband, and Keitarō is a candidate but not the only one. She is introduced in the manga falling for a prank from Sakiko. Sakiko advises that the way to a man's heart is to grab him by the testicles. She promptly does this to Keitarō with the expected results. Both Keitarō and Kihiro advise her that such tactics may end the Sonozaki clan. She is particularly concerned about how boys see her, which Sakiko happily teases her about. Keitarō frequently consoles her not to worry since she is "very popular" amongst the boys.

Currently in both chapters, Keitarō's mother, Keiichi's wife, is unnamed. Both introduce her as his primary parent since Keiichi is away at work as a secretary to a politician currently under investigation. Ichirō and Aiko live with them in the Maebara house. Keitarō and his father are yet to directly interact other than in flash backs, particularly in Oniokushi-hen where Keiichi preaches to his young son the power of friendship to change fate.

Keitarō calls Rika frequently for advice as both stories unfold. Unlike the other female parents, whom he addresses as "aunt," he addresses her as "big sister," since apparently the reminder of her age irritates her.

"Aunt" Rena is the mother to his best male friend whom he tended to tease and play pranks on. Early on, Keitarō realizes Rena ability to detect and denounce lies.

Thus far in both chapters, he mainly has interacts with "Aunt" Satoko through her daughter who works at her shop and bring him and the others to take part in helping the marketing. Satoko appears quite modern in her tactics, which include internet videos.

In his reminisces depicted in Oniokoshi-hen, Keitarō recalls that "Aunt" Mion always use to watch them play as young children. He claims that since she always wanted a son, she paid him a lot of attention.
